Rubus sp., perhaps Dewberry - Rubus trivialis - though I don't know that it will be likely to be found in Vermont.

Southern Dewberry (Rubus trivialis)

Rubus trivialis is very prickly.

Interesting.
Leaves in a circle..5 leaflets from one stem.
Peltate...like an umbrella
Like Schefflera but looks to be deciduous to me.
End of leaves very tapered.

Could it be a young Aesculus parviflora? Probably not because the leaflets are widest at a different point.

Although see also the leaves picture here:

My poor old eyes see a lot of thorns/prickles along the visible stems in the one image. There also appear to possibly be prickles along the petioles AND petiolules.

Additionally, Aesculus parviflora will have opposite arrangement of its palmately compound leaves. The plant in question has alternate arrangement along those thorny/prickly stems.

I will invite any question about Bottlebrush Buckeye, as they are an intimate and permanent element of Viburnum Valley...

Yes, I completely missed that the leaves were alternate D'Oh! The leaves on the Rubus do look similar but in this picture look more coarsely toothed than the ID plant unless it's because the photo isn't sharp enough to show them

Yes, what we all wish is that Vtgardener would respond to replies to the inquiry, and post additional pictures - including closeups of the stems, leaf parts, etc.

Sorry I don't check this site often. We pulled the plant up and destroyed it. Since it is poisonous, don't think its a wise idea to have in my flower bed. *Blush* Shrug!

@Vtgardener Thanks for checking back. What did you decide it was that was poisonous?
