Hi, my name is Lindsey and my husbands grandmother sold daylilies online through auctions. She passed a few years back and I brought home as many of her flowers as I could haul. I recently started thinking I should sale some of them but I have no idea where to begin! Any advice would be great!

My first suggestion would be to take photos of the blooms of each plant, then confirm that they are labeled correctly by looking them up on this site or the AHS site. You will want to know for sure that the plants did not get mixed up in moving and that they were labeled correctly to begin with. If it has been many years since your husband's grandmother sold plants, they will probably be all older cultivars and you might want to try and sell them at the farmers market. But, go to the lily auction and type in the names of some of the newer ones and see if any of them have sold recently. That will give you some idea of their popularity. Did she record the hybridizer and the year registered on the plant markers? That would be a big help in selling if those were known.

I think she recorded the hybridized and the year on her tags! Also I have a good deal of plants she had not registered and didn't have tags… but unfortunately I don't know the hybridizer for those…

The only plants she would register herself, would be plants that she hybridized. So it might be those plants not registered were seedlings that she was working with. Do you if she just sold plants or if she actually was a hybridizer? Have you checked to see if her name is listed as a hybridizer?

Hi 4nanny09. I'm thinking if you find one of her seedlings that is worthy of her, you might be able to take one of her seedlings and register with her name. But I'm not 100% on that, because how do we know for sure if it was one of your husband's grandmother's seedlings, or a daylily that was already registered with a missing label? So I'm not sure on that, but if you had record that it was a seedling, that might be a nice touch.

Here's a link to a daylily database you can search that is associated with this site. Each daylily you find, there is a direct link to the AHS site Larry referred to. Often this site has more pictures to compare with, so maybe it will be helpful. Another thing to log when you look up the daylilies is the ploidy. Hybridized daylilies are mostly Diploids or Tetraploids. And some hybridizers need to know that. You can cross Diploids with Diploids, and Tetraploids with Tetraploids. That's why it matters to hybridizers.

I guess it depends on how much time you want to put into it. I have a friend that sells daylilies unnamed with no information on Facebook for a small price that's reasonable for her and its fine for buyers that just want a pretty flower. But if you have some $20 plants or more, you might want to research them as much as you can.

If you are going to sell them locally, you can divide and pot them any way you want. But if you are going to use the Lily Auction, you may want to practice dividing daylilies and mailing them, if you haven't done it before. And you might want to consider "lining them out". If I understand this process right, you can dig up and divide a clump with 10 fans into 5 plants with two fans, and let them grow in a pot or the garden for a few months to make sure the plant is in good shape before you mail it.

She definitely was a hybridized! And yes the I tagged plants where her seedlings she never got to register! She owned big stump daylilies.

Easiest of all is to try to sell them locally on Craig's List, a photo and a price plus number of fans is usually enough. I'm listing some of my seedlings on our local Craig's List now. Tree mail me if you want a link to see how I've gone about it. I'm also inviting people to visit by appointment to select what they would like from the rejects of this year's seedlings - dig while you wait at mostly $5 for 1-3 fans.

If you do use the Lily Auction you can use Store Post if you have at least 3 offerings of the plant you want to sell at a set price. There is no charge to list by store post but you will pay a commission if they sell. The downside is that you have to leave them on there for a longer time.

I think Facebook has some buy and sell daylily sites also but can't point you to them right offhand.

You have yet to mention her full name. Perhaps someone here knew her, and her creations and can point you in the right direction.
I did find a reference to Big Stump Daylilies on Dave's Garden website but nobody has listed any input other than an address.

Similarly, someone on the Lily Auction (confusingly sells daylilies, not lilies) was a seller named 'Big Stump', according to the quote from one of the pages of this website:
March 29th, 2016: "Obtained plant. Received two fans as a bonus from Big Stump on the Lily Auction. Pot planted and awaiting blooms."

I think that the plant was just a random cultivar she was selling. I do not think her to me Henry-M.
The same person who made the first comment on this website made another similar comment about Big Stump, with regard to a 2006 intro by Carpenter-J. Leading me to believe those are just products she sold (or gave away), not that she is either Henry-M, or Carpenter-J.

If you want to start small and just get your feet wet, then try the classifieds here. I have been looking at some of my clumps and a few are getting way out of control, like my Kanai Sensei. I plan to split later this summer and sell some of the clumps plus others on the classifieds.

Another possibility that may help you get organized, as well, is to invest in Plantstep, which lets you catalogue the plants you have with information, a photo and a price (or just listed as display) - the Plantstep site shows all the people who are using it and want to show their listings online, so you can easily make changes and simply provide a link to your list. That's also a way you can show NOIDs and seedlings individually while providing photos of the blooms.

So I've been trying to make sure all my tags are with the correct plants and I'm so glad you gave me this advice because I have found 3 already that don't match tags… I still have a lot more to go! Just wanted to thank you for this!!

@4nanny09, some bummer thoughts to save heartache later: I wonder if Mississippi is a state where a grower is expected to be certified or licensed and inspected to sell plants. It can get confusing, but some states can be pretty restrictive (to contain pests and diseases). Some states have a hissy fit if you sell across state lines without the proper certification, or even sell within the state without being licensed and inspected. Seems like I heard from a reputable source that, here in Tennessee, you aren't even supposed to GIVE plants away without the proper licensure. I know- what fun is that? And you know it happens all the time from a gazillion yards. If you do get licensed, you may be expected to only buy stock from licensed growers. And to top it off, there may be zoning issues, depending on where you grow and plan on selling. State law varies quite a bit, and it's worth checking to see what's legal. Bareroot vs potted, selling at your property vs farmer's market vs mailorder, within the state vs out-of-state...

That is a very cute one. It says the person it is named for is from Mississippi, which I think is where the Big Stump Daylilies was.

If you type "Wheeler" into the "hybridizer" box, then select Wheeler-H from the drop-down, it comes up with a bunch (22) of daylilies registered:

I noticed that one of the 22 is named My Daughter Jan. That might be a clue as to whether it's the same H. Wheeler.
