Would someone be able to identify this very-late blooming iris? I photographed it at Longwood Gardens on June 18 in a sunny garden, far from any body of water. I was amazed to see an iris blooming this late in the season.

The foliage is variegated and the flower scapes are about 3 - 4 feet tall. A Longwood gardener thought it was a Siberian iris. My Siberian irises finished blooming several weeks ago, so I would love to know what cultivar this is if indeed it is a Siberian. I read that Japanese irises bloom later than Siberians, but tend to grow near water.

Thank you.

It's a Japanese Iris, probably Japanese Iris (Iris ensata 'Silverband'). Japanese Irises like growing in water, but will do just fine in ordinary garden soils as long as they aren't exposed to prolonged dry conditions.

Kent,
Thank you very much for the ID and information that Japanese irises can be grown in ordinary garden soil away from water.

Agreed. Mine grow, in many gardens, without any additional water.
