I just read up the description of Pelargonium and it's not a geranium. I always thought I have a geranium.

Geranium is the common name for Pelargonium. It's confusing since it's also the scientific name for a genus of (usually) hardy perennials.

Most casual references to this plant would be to call it a geranium. These links are relatively generic.
Zonal Geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum)
Pelargoniums (Pelargonium)

There are also many specific cultivars, too many to attach a name to a plant that did not have a cultivar tag @ the time of purchase. It looks like you've had it for a while, or found an unusually big one to buy.

Does anyone know when/why pelargoniums started being called geraniums? I only have real geraniums and always have to clarify what I am talking about. (I refer to pelargoniums as old lady plants, no offense to anyone.)

I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Aha, explains a lot. Thank you. I will try not to be so territorial about my geraniums and more tolerant of pelargoniums.
