Hi All

I hope someone might be able to advise how best to start off this climbing "Peace" rose, so it trains up and across the frame in the picture.

There are several stems at the moment and I wan't sure if I should just chop off all but two or three stems and as they grow tie them into the post with flexible supports of some kind.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

All best

so I am only new to growing and training climbers, but all the research I've done points to them flowing best when the main canes are horizontal, or 45 degrees or less to the horizontal. from there shoots grow vertical and flower at the top, so the more horizontal the main cane is, the more vertical shoots can come out of it and flower.
Based on that big wood frame in the pic perhaps some wire going lengthwise that you can train canes to, if that's where you want it to grow.

If you want to keep the rose in that site, what about a obelisk? You can train the canes to go around and around and it won't take up much space. And like Charley said: "all the research I've done points to them flowing best when the main canes are horizontal, or 45 degrees or less to the horizontal. from there shoots grow vertical and flower at the top, so the more horizontal the main cane is, the more vertical shoots can come out of it and flower."

Agree with all but wanted to add- DON'T cut back anything. Climbing roses shouldn't be pruned in their first years ; roses store an enormous amount of energy in their canes, and a rose that is so young needs all the canes it has.
