We have a lot of backyard hybridizers on here, pretty must l much all of us. I'm struggling with the decisions of culling some seedlings, along with other lilies that I haven't used in any attempts to hybridize with.

What are things you look for in your culling? Weak stems, not anything different that what's already available?

If you don't use it to hybridize with, for whatever reason, do you still keep it in the gardens?

A challenging question. Just how many white trumpets does a person need?

I have taken out some really ugly bulbs that were very, very easy to destroy, buds that have a tendency to not fully open and when they do, they are not worth keeping around. Things like crimped or folded petals go too. That gives me a start. Patterns not to my liking, they can go too.

Weak stems on a beautiful flower, that's something I might keep around to breed with stronger stem for nice flower potential.

In the end, what I have realized is that if you like it, you keep it. If you are doing it for your own enjoyment, it doesn't so much matter that the world loves what you've done. It only matters if you find fulfillment. And sharing what you find fulfilling can be nice too.

So you too see Luka, that the lily gift is within the beholder. When you are breeding for pink tetraploid trumpets and get whites with not a lot different going on in them, and you are limited in space. What do you do? Feed them to the cattle or find someone who wants some. This happens from time to time.
