I like to try new Hibiscus and related species from seed and I have learned not to be surprised when something turns out to be other than what it has been presented as, but the identity of this one eludes me.
I sowed this seed in March. I received it as Hibiscus splendens. It has grown quickly and the leaves seem to grow larger and larger over time. It is over 3 feet tall at this point, and although it has spread outward some, growth seems to be directed upward. The leaf in the photo is about 12 inches wide and more than 15 inches long. There are several leaves this size around the plant. The leaves are hirsute, but older leaves are cleaner than new leaves. The hairs are very, very short and fine, and are on both the front and back of the leaves, giving them a soft smooth feel. The main stem is covered with much longer and thicker hairs, but they are not prickly.
Photos I've seen of splendens show deeply lobed leaves. I'm embarrassed to say that I only noticed this discrepancy a few days ago.
These are uniformly heart shaped and appear more crenate than serrate to my eyes.
Have I given some noxious monster a 20 gallon pot to luxuriate in while I look to make room for it in the greenhouse for fall? This plant seems so familiar...
I appreciate any responses.
Thanks, Alana
