What is this weed invading my garden? When I pull it up it looks similar to nutsedge but I can't find any tubers.

It looks like nut sedge to me too. Either the plants are too young to have 'nuts' yet or, the 'nuts' broke off when you pulled it up.

Shovel or smother.

You cannot smother it, it has rhizomes that just keep on ticking.

I have dealt with it for ten years and had to go buy another bottle of Nut Sedge killer as it takes years to eradicate.
I have some powder dedicated killer but do not like to use that unless it is wide spread as it can be hard on a lawn in dry weather.

It killed 90 percent of it last year but some still has just popped up.

I've smothered this before. This plant is about 50% of what is growing in our mowed area, so I get a lot of it in cultivated areas.

My infestation covered an area approx. 12 by 12 but it was not in just square area .
Sadly I got some down home, from sod I bought.

This stuff has rhizomes like Quack Grass so you either kill it or it will get worse.
If you dig it, you HAVE to dig deep and get the rhizomes which is extremely difficult unless you want to dig up your whole yard and then , like Quack Grass miss one bit and it keeps on going. I tip my hat to you.

This nutsedge is growing in my lawn but I'm afraid it could spread to my garden so that's why I asked.

It may be too warm to apply the herbicide now. Be sure to check the label first.
