I'm in eastern NC. I am wondering when I should plant my cabbage seeds outdoors for Fall harvest?

Thank you!

The Johnny's Selected Seeds website has a number of planning tools and calculators:
https://www.johnnyseeds.com/gr...

Scroll down to the "fall harvest planting calculator" and enter your average first frost date in the calculator.

Hope that helps! Smiling

Do you seed straight in the field or do you container seed and then transplant in the open field? Also have you got problems with locusts and grasshoppers? Finally what cabbages do you plan on seeding?

Elpollo - I plant seeds directly outdoors in my raised bed. Only pests I've had issues with cabbage are caterpillars which I have pesticides for. Not sure on the variety, but it's a basic green cabbage with large head when it's ripe for harvest time.

Weedwacker - thanks for the link, but it wouldn't let me change the frost date.

Well, that's strange - maybe the link I posted was specific to my calculator. If you're interested in trying it, just go to johnnyseeds.com, then to the "grower's library", and from there to the planning tools and calculators. Also, when it opens in Excel, make sure it isn't in "protected view" which will prevent you from editing.

You are probably in a area where cabbage will grow into the winter (7B OR 8A); Even so your window is closing for direct seeding. Variety does make difference. Use to grow storage cabbage Late Flat Dutch and Drumhead) in 7a Virginia .These take about 100 days to harvest .Seeded early July for November harvest. Here in Ga I plant in late July ( Platinum Dynasty (80 day mains season) for harvest beginning in November usually lasting into January.
