This plant was seen in a local park in San Marcos, Texas two days ago. This area is in zone 8b. The plant has soft leaves, like a mallow, but unusually placed flowers on the stem. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I'll guess a legume, but that's as far as I can go.
Plant it and they will come.

I agree - something in the pea family.

Thank you both for responding. I think I need to get back to the park where I saw the plant and take a better photograph. I don't think that this plant is in the pea family but I can see how it's hard to identify. Thanks again.
