Richard,

The next HIPS sale will likely take place in late July to early August 2022. I'll be sure to post in the Irises forum as soon as the date is set.

Richard, it's not the season for digging, planting, ordering or shipping irises right now. Now is the time for planning and making wish lists. Ordering takes place as early as January, February, or March. Digging should take place 6 weeks after bloom, if the vender knows what they're doing, so that is in July for TBs. Sales (for leftovers) can be expected in late August or September. Planting needs to be done while the soil is still warm enough for the rhizomes to establish a new root system before hard freezes begin. I don't think I'd plant past September unless I had a greenhouse.

If a vendor digs in May or even early June, he or she is doing so for his own convenience, and not thinking about getting you good rhizomes that will bloom next year. It takes 6 weeks after bloom for a new rhizome to develop new buds internally for next year. If you interrupt that process by digging them too soon, they may live, but the rhizomes will be underdeveloped and probably won't bloom the following spring. They will usually need another year or two before they bloom. At least I have always found this to be the case when vendors shipped to me too early. I keep track of such things.

Daisy,. I know ordering start first part of next year and digging/shipping is not until summer time. I have grown irises for awhile now so I know their preferences.

I just wanted an idea of when to expect their sale so I could set funds aside for it little bit at a time.

Richard ~ You will save even more if you wait until you have your house. Then you will also have less work, not having to move them from your current location to your own home.

Evelyn, I am just being selective in the ones I get until the time and it gives me something to do when I'm at home with grover my puppy. The lasts ones I had I had to get rid of to pay a bill as I was becoming homeless almost 2 years ago.

Richard, the HIPS site will have sale info sometime next year. Unlike the growers, they have to organize all the volunteer's and their donations. I wasn't a fan of how they did it this year. They were offering collections, and I already had some of the iris in the collections, when there was only one or two I wanted.. But I bought anyway.. What was better though, was having the donors send directly to the purchaser. The rhizomes were fresher, in general, and a littler better size.

Thanks Sherry. Even though I like slot of the new ones, the historic irises have a special place with me.
