I think I've asked about this plant in the past but that memory cell is still on vacation this morning. Spotted in St. Augustine. The tallest ones were around 7 ft. tall. TIA!

Apparently they (along with Odontonema stritum) are all the same plant. While the botanists figure it all out, just call it a Firespike Hilarious!

At the moment, Odontonema cuspidatum is still considered a separate and accepted name for a species in the Acanthaceae.

However, don't ask me to describe it! No clue! Hilarious!

The state of Florida seems very confused:

https://florida.plantatlas.usf...

I found several .org sites using all the names interchangeably. When I Google "Odontonema cuspidatum in Florida", I find this site:

https://gardeningsolutions.ifa...

But nothing comparable for Thyrsacanthus tubaeformis leaving me to think Florida feels their FIrespike plants are Odontonema cuspidatum.

Thank you very much for the replies! It sounds like it would be at least root-hardy where I am, if I could find some.

Tiffany, if you see a friendly-looking gardener, you could ask for cuttings. They are dead easy to root. Green Grin! (Do a pest check, of course.)

Thank you! That was spotted in a commercial setting so I didn't try to "talk plants" with anyone. I'll be on the lookout for it at stores though, especially when I'm in FL. Your comment is helpful info to have since I'll only feel like I need to get 1 even if I want more. I'll still blow my budget for that trip, as always, ...on something. Usually more pots if I run out of plants that I want to buy.

At a particular store, it can happen. But in general, not a chance. LOL!!
