Happy 2022 to All!

Instead of looking forward,
I'm still looking backward!

I posted about the woman who broke codes,
helped America win wars and improve security,
The PBS show Codebreaker tells her story.

Johannian said he is familiar with her accomplishments,
for which she did not receive recognition,
until boxes of documents were opened!

Here is the link to the book,
The Woman Who Smashed Codes.

If you are interested in more info about
this smart, dedicated, amazing woman,
you can read more about her life,
by scrolling down the page to read
an interview with the author!

Looking forward to reading
about your adventures through books!

I liked Nora by Nuala O'Connor so much that I got an earlier novel: Miss Emily. It treats the middle years of Emily Dickinson, with the point-of-view alternating with Ada Concannon, her Irish maid and cook.

Insightful about human affairs, it also has some wonderful descriptive writing. Glad I discovered O'Connor's work. She's a rare jewel!

Hi Yall! Smiling

Yes, Ronnie, I'm trying to stay out of the book stores,
as well as other stores.
This past week I stopped at the garden center.
Spent almost as much $ as I did on holiday gifts!
Then I had to put plants in garage since we were close to freezing!

Now back to books!
The Elephant in the Garden, sounds interesting,
as well as the other books, especially since librarian gives seal of approval.

Chip, the book, and author, about Emily Dickinson, and her Irish maid and cook,
also sound interesting! Thanks for the info!

I appreciate the book reviews!

Now I see (again) the value of books.
They open the doors to so many worlds!

On Shark Tank, Kevin Hart and Mark Cuban made a deal with
Black Sands who has a series of books, including comic books.
They hope to expand to other media, movies, toys, etc.

I thought they said they publish books for $2 and sell them for $20.
We will probably hear more from, and about, this company!

Sally, that was a good find for your son's gift!
I also found a great book buy at the $1 store.
While looking for kids' activity books,
I glanced at other books,
where this hard cover got my attention.

The book is Hurricane Season by Joe Holley!
Since we live in hurricane zone,
I looked at the book cover.

It was about the Houston Astros winning season!
Since SIL, is an Astros fan, I bought book for him!
The book is written by sports writer for Houston Chronicle.
So book has behind-the-scenes info!
SIL attended Astros games with his father.
He seemed surprised and happy with this book!

The price of the book, $1.
The memories in the book, priceless!

Ronnie.. I came up with a zero for your list
The only elephant I can recall is water for elephants..I liked it but no memory of the take

Did you read A discovery of Witches? .. I think you will like it

I am reading catching fireflies two chapters in and I like it very much

I read Bag of Bones in someone's recommendation.. King didn't do too much evil to kids in real time.. but there was a lot of descriptive innuendo... he can't help himself. But I did like it .. Billy summers awaits

Rosie I did read A Discovery of Witches and loved it, also the next two, and passed them on to my MIL for Christmas this year.
I remember Water for Elephants and it was good, probably needs a reread for me as I forget some of it too Whistling

Just finished Pinocchio, original and unabridged. Man, I hate that kid. Three-quarters of the book I was wishing I could teach that rogue a lesson or two. Most parts I was forcing myself to read it...

Reading Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes right now. It seems so funny 😂😂 Has any one ever read the Russian novel Crime and Punishment? I'd have to say that is one of my ultimate favorite books. 😃it's written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I also recommend Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy; such an enjoyable read.

Finished "The Language of Butterflies" by Wendy Williams recently. Started it last year but finished juuust into January.

Decided to take a break from my sciencey reads and tackle some fictions, as it's been a while. Started the first book in the Wheel of Time series. Wanted to read it for years and just hadn't gotten around to it. And now that there's a tv series for it, the books are pretty abundant. Hilarious!

I was going to buy them in sets of 3 (they come in mass market paperbacks in groups of 3), but decided to spend the extra and get some of the nicer trade paperback versions. I like the covers much better, and they felt like they'd be more comfortable to hold. Plus, I'm not fond of thin mass market paper...

just starting Fuzz by Mary Roach - nonfic
https://maryroach.net/fuzz.htm...

but also checking out Grapes of Wrath as son just picked it up.
And last night while tossing and turning I downloaded Bryson's book about hiking the AT. No offense to Bill Bryson, whose writing I enjoy, or to the narrator, but it was a good choice to fall asleep with. Not exciting enough to make me try and stay awake.
Plant it and they will come.
