Hi all,

I didn't see a Vine forum, so I knew this had to be the place.

I planted this very beautiful flowering vine last year for the first time. I have it it a container (don't want the rabbits or any critter chewing it up).

Question is: When do I take all the old brown stems off the trellis. When new green growth appears?

Can't wait to see the flowering this year! I'm going to get a full year of flowers that attract the Hummers! Lovey dubby Hurray! Thumbs up

oh!! It's beautiful, I have been wanting one. It blooms on old and new growth so you can prune or leave it. The old brown stems will bloom too.

I was looking for it and I saw this on North Creek website. Sorry, forgot to give the link!

Lonicera sempervirens 'Major Wheeler' Growing and Maintenance Tips
Major Wheeler prefers average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. More sun will give you more flowers. Tolerant of drought and dry soils once established, but either may reduce flower production and growth. Blooms on previous year's growth and new growth, so you can trim it back or leave it be. Prune to best suit your site. Lonicera sempervirens is a twining vine and needs small to medium width support to climb. Ideal on a trellis or open fence. Can climb a wood fence with help getting started.

I purchased Major Wheeler from Romence Gardens online they are located in Grand Rapids MI. The honeysuckle vine was the only thing I purchased from them and was extremely impressed by the nice large plant they sent. The plant grew well last year and should take right off this year growing even more. I also have Dropmore Scarlet honeysuckle vine which has been here for years I prune it back yearly and it bloom from spring to fall in the season it is a hummingbird magnet. I am hoping MW will do the same it replaced a trumpet vine that became a garden thug sprouting everywhere if only they didn't want to take over the garden the blooms are beautiful. I am still battling trying to get rid of sprouts I would never never ever plant a trumpet vine ever again.

Wow, thanks for the tip! I will check out Dropmore Scarlet. I have heard good things about Romance Gardens, not only that the plants are big but that shipping is real reasonable too.
I am getting MW from Lazy S's because they have most of the stuff on my wish list. They are a good nursery and very close to me. Green Grin!

"I will check out Dropmore Scarlet" I agree But, I don't have the money to buy another trellis this year, maybe next year.

My Dropmore Scarlet is on a very sturdy tall trellis made by my hubby, it gets quite tall but takes pruning easily. I have never ordered from Lazy S, I ordered from Romence Gardens because the shipping was resonable compared to others since I was only ordering the one plant. Although I think the shipping was slightly more than the MW but I couldn't find it locally and had my mind set on it.

Susan,

I don't understand. Confused

Coral Honeysuckle isn't invasive.

Dropmore Scarlet is beautiful and I got a couple of shrubs from Lazy S's last year. I was impressed. I did put them under my recommendations but here is a picture.
