I haven't grown any daylilies in containers, so can't answer Phil's question.
One nice thing about the Plant of the Day series is that it is a chance for me to take a hard look at the daylilies I own to see if they are worth keeping anymore. Violet Victory is a gorgeous bloom, but after looking at its stats, I've decided that I either need to move it to see if it does better or get rid of it altogether.
Would love to know how this one does for other folks. It is in an area of my garden that seems to be a trouble spot for me since I have had two other daylilies and a Pow Wow Wild Berry coneflower die in that small 4-foot area of a long row of daylilies. The ground there is a little lower, but not much, so I don't understand it.
I've had Violet Victory since 2013 and it has not multiplied very quickly. Last March, I only counted 5 fans. It is supposed to be 33 inches tall, but it is usually in the 24-inch range. This may suggest that I have the wrong plant, but I don't believe I do. I think it is the spot in my garden.
It also doesn't have very good branching or bud count for me, usually 2-way branching with 10-12 buds.

By 5 pm, the blooms are very faded. Now that I am retired, I get to enjoy the blooms in the morning. It is pictured here with the Pow Wow Wild Berry coneflower that died.

6/5/2016 - 8:39 am, different day, but it looks so much better in the morning. I believe that this picture shows the truest colors of Violet Victory.
I would call this an EMO (early morning opener) when it is fully open at 6:30am

And with blooms like these, it would be difficult to get rid of. I think I should just move it. It is a beautiful blue-violet eye.
