My dream lilly has really taken a beating. It's really thick and I'm having a difficult time cutting the dead leaves out of it. Would it hurt to just cut the whole thing off to the top of the pot? Or should I separate it?

Have never heard of a dream lily. Wondering if it is a type of Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) Anyone out there familiar with it and the proper name for it? Looks like a beautiful plant. Interested

It does look like a Spatiphyllum , common name Peace Lily. But it's not a Lily at all. It is an Aroid.
It actually looks quite good ! Definitely do not cut it flush with soil! It might kill it, at best it'll take ages to regrow.
Do not let it dry out, it likes to be moist and warm (above 70f , better 75-80f Smiling ).
Just cut the yellow and dry leaves close to the crown and give it a warm shower, leave it overnight in the shower stall after running hot water to steam it up: it loves high humidity and will perk up noticeably.
And do not separate it! It's fine as is. They really sulk after repot/messed up roots, it will look bad for 6 months..
Just give it some houseplant fertilizer once it warms up to 75f.. and water it sufficiently. So the leaves are turgid . Do not wait till they wilt. If it happens try to remember when you last watered, and next time water sooner ( water well to soak the root ball).

Cut all the yellow and dead leaves off. This will give more energy for the rest of it to grow, and prevent pests who are attracted to dead stuff!

Edit: I'm curious why you're having trouble cutting the dead leaves off?

Still wondering about what the scientific name of your plant is. Googled the name Dream Lily, but can't find any that looks like your plant. So now it's becoming my new must have! (Think spring fever is upon me.)

Please forgive me I want playing with your heads. It was mine! D'Oh! It is Peace Lily, not a Dream Lilly. The stems are so compacted is hard to get the shears inside to cut them. Will do tho. Thank you so much

That's a very nice looking plant! Agree, once you remove the dead leaves, it will be amazing.

It can be tedious to remove dead bits on plants. I'm doing a lot of that this weekend as I bring each plant outside for summer vacay. They were packed so tight, I haven't done any maintenance for a few months. But once you get it under control, you can more easily trim single leaves as they occasionally shrivel/turn brown.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.
