Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Ida's Magic')

Ida's Magic has been here 6 or 7 years now. It had a couple of off years, but has mostly bloomed quite well. I have not measured its height, but I really feel it is more like 24" tall. Pretty color and a hardy evergreen in my zone.

An older Stout medal winner that, as I recall, was an important hybridizing plant for its time (evident from 452 child plants). Here it did have a number of splotchy or malformed blooms. Probably was a marginal performer here.

This is not a review since I haven't had the plant long enough. I just got Ida's Magic in the fall, so I haven't seen it bloom yet. However, it seems to be a fast increaser since it has gone from two fans to four already. Foliage is very healthy--no rust so far. Keeping fingers crossed. I will add more later.

Edit: The plant has continued to thrive and do well. It is reached its full height, has been blooming, and has shown no rust. I am hoping the color will be clearer on future blooms, but so far the plant is a keeper.


July 20: The plant has grown well but has shown rust several times since my last entry. I just cut it back for the second time. I'm afraid this one is going to have to go. I am sad about it because it obviously likes my garden.


I am adding an addendum in August of 2022. Ida's Magic has unfortunately displayed a susceptibility for rust. Since writing the above, I have cut the plant back several times, and just did again yesterday. I am sad about this since the plant obviously liked it here and has been a vigorous grower. But I am going to replace Ida's Magic.

Well, Nan was kind enough to send it up here, for which I'm grateful! As of October 2022, IM had 3 fans and no rust. Let's see what it can do up here!

@Zoia, Ida's Magic had increased enough in one year that I was able to divide it and send fans to both you and @Hazelcrestmikeb. Maybe you both can review it after it has been in your gardens for awhile.
