Thread OP
Sebastopol, CA
Hi, my question is regarding propagating pothos cuttings. I have about 5 jars with 6 single leave cuttings with nodes in each jar rooting in water. The roots began to grow within a day or two and then practically stopped after a couple weeks. I change the water once a week. They are sitting on a table near a window but never get direct sunlight. They have been rooting since the beginning of February. Most of the cuttings are now growing small new leaves but the roots are not even close to an inch long. I am wondering if I should plant them soon or continue to leave them in water and hope the roots grow longer. Some of the new leaves are underwater because they are growing at the nodes so I'm unsure if they will rot. Thank you! I live in Sebastopol, California, which is an hour north of San Francisco.

Just take them out of water and stick them in a container of potting soil. You'll probably have better results. Epipremnum aureum doesn;t root ITSELF in water in the wild, why should you?

You can try potting them in soil now, pothos propagates easily and you don't want the roots to be loo long anyway before putting them into soil.

If you like experimenting, you can try different things with the jar of leaf cuttings to see which option works best and keeps the plant growing quicker:
- Jar 1: put some leaves into soil
- Jar 2: add some soil to water in the jar. Keep adding each day until a week and then put the leaves into soil (this helps new cuttings to adjust better from water medium to soil medium)
- Jar 3: change the water every other day and check if the roots grow faster in a 1-2 week time

Good luck!

I've had success propagating pothos directly in soil as well as water. With as many nodes showing in your picture I'd be surprised if the soil method doesn't work.

What Ken said. Once I had them in the soil it seemed to take forever for them to start growing. But the they adapted and now I have 2 nice looking variagated pothos.
