I have a double white amaryllis (name unknown). It bloomed two years in a row, but then skipped this past Christmas/winter season. It had created several little bulb-lets, which I potted up separately last fall; so I didn't think too much of the main bulb skipping its winter bloom cycle. Lo and behold, now in the month of May all of a sudden it is sending up a flower bud! Is off-season blossoming common for amaryllis, or perhaps did I cause this when I separated the baby plants from the mother? One of the baby bulbs didn't grow for the longest time. In fact, I nearly threw it out, thinking that it had begun to rot. Now, a couple of weeks ago, that little bulb has begun to send up leaves. I don't know all that much about amaryllis, but I'm hoping I didn't cause the main bulb any long-lasting harm by throwing it off schedule. Thanks everyone.

I don't think you harmed it. Since it hadn't bloomed on its own, it probably just needed more dormant time.

When they are potted or bare, and bloom for Xmas, it is because they have been dormant for a certain length of time, then woken up by watering and they usually bloom in some predictable time frame.

When grown in the ground where they are hardy (I have some ) winter is the cold period, mine are noe growing some leaves and should bloom early summer? I guess. Then more leaves grow until frost, so the plant can rebuild the bulb.
Plant it and they will come.

Thank you, Sally! I'm looking forward to the end of this month, when my several bulbs and now also the several little bulb-lets can be planted outdoors for the summer. The plant now sending up the flower bud will go out when it has finished blooming. Here's hoping it then can get enough dormant time to get back to a winter bloom schedule.
