I have wanted for 2 years now to grow chives, but I never seem to be able to keep them alive. Any tips?

What are you doing? You might be trying too hard. They don't need much more than soil and water. In your climate, afternoon shade will help.
You're talking about onion chives with the purple flowers, right?

I grow onion chives, but they are about to die in our heat, garlic chives are tougher, but this year is being equally hard on them. I can't get seed to germinate tho, so I always pick up 3 tubs when HD/Lowes has them show up. They grow gangbusters from Oct/Nov until June or July tho. Kinda like my cilantro/thyme - same times and temps and don't slow down for freezes. Just too hot and dry here even in shade - plus they get super strong when the heat hits.
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

I guess it would be a little drastic, but you could move up here to northern Michigan - as far as I can tell it's next to impossible to kill a chive plant !

Are you growing them indoors or outdoors?

Yes onion chives. I am trying to grow them outdoors, maybe the heat? I start them under shade in starting soil.

I cant grow a chive either. I can only figure its the heat. Im going to bring in one of the pots and try to save it until fall and see if it will like that.

At this time of year in this heat, seeds will be a challenge. If you can, buy a 3-4" pot and plant directly into soil, water daily until you see new growth. Once they take hold you'll always have them plus some to share every year or so. They'll need afternoon shade.
