I got Purple Porcupine as an extra in an order and not only does it bloom a lot and for a long time, the purple doesn't fade. It's the only one of that color that I have that doesn't fade. I looked at the pedigree and it just said unknown x unknown. Are there other sunfast purples?

The best dark purple I have is an oldie, Bela Lugosi. Totally sunfast (but does get spotty in the rain).

Ron Reimer breeds for sun fastness as well as rust resistance, and he has some purples I was thinking of trying for that reason, including Flying Fox, Purple Pathways, Purple Sails, and Inner Net.

Depends what your heat is. Oklahoma summers are almost always over 95 degrees for a couple months during the day (little cool down at night either), and this year (so far) we have gone over 100 degrees many many days. So sunfast/color fast purples are all relative to ones climate...I've tried many purples (our climate actually shows more maroon color then actual purple), including the standards Bela Lugosi, Evening Enchantment etc. but they just didn't hold up much past 90. The purples that have held up for me over the years and look pretty darn good at the end of the day in high heat and mostly sun are: Mary's Baby and Paul Voth. Roman Steel did pretty good the last two years, but it blooms early before the real high heat sets in. That may be the secret. Get early bloomers for a better chance of color and substance retention. Also, putting your darker colors in PM shade helps for some, but even then, the substance of the petals can slick, melt, discolor, burn etc.......Good Luck with trialing your purples..........Maryl (top=Paul Voth, bottom=Mary's Baby

Bela Lugosi has always been a good bloomer and holds up well in the rain.

I'm going to cast a vote for https://garden.org/lists/view/...) It does very well in my garden, and seems immune to Wisconsin winters.

Bela Lugosi and Nosferatu are both Curt Hanson's. I am guessing all of his fantastic purples are colorfast.
