I have an iris that I don't remember its name. I have had it for many-many years, inherited from a lost friend of mine. It is in the tall-bearded category. I searched the net for some old varieties of irises and in this site: https://davesgarden.com/guides..., they have it identified as Alcazar. If I search the net again, Alcazar is very dark purple, not at all like the one in davesgarden. I enclose a picture of a bouquet with the irises that I have. On the other hand, I saw some other irises that have some ressemblance with mine - depending on the light when the picture was taken: Apollodorus, Almost Paradise... I was wondering if you could help me or maybe someone that knows old iris varieties.. Thank you so much for offering this service to the community. Louise (BeetleJuice)

That definitely doesn't look like Alcazar in my opinion. Yours, with its reddish bottom and yellowish tops looks more like something in the "variegata" coloratation pattern. A search in our database for tall bearded variegatas brings up 37 pages of results.

I'd advise next year getting closeup shots of various portions of the bloom, including beards, hafts and styles, making a note of exact height of bloom, time of bloom in comparison to other tall beardeds, and whether there is purple-based foliage. Then you mght be able to narrow down the search some, and pick out some possibilities to test out by planting suspected known cultivars to compare with yours.

Thank you so much, Daisy Do and Irisarian, for your help. I will do that and already, I have viewed some pages of the link given to see if I would recognize my iris in one of those. Next year, I will have a good idea on what to look for and take some pictures of the flowers when they appear. Hugs!

The Historic Iris Preservation Society website has an excellent gallery of photos of older irises. You can filter on the colour of the standards, falls and beards to narrow down the search.

Hi Beetle Juice!
I think I can help a tiny little bit by ruling out Apollodorus. I grow it. The overall shape of your iris seems to be older, more Historic. The falls on Apollodorus are more brick red than red violet and the edge on them is quite wide and orange, nearly matching the standards.
Good luck in your search!

@Beetlejuice It reminds me a bit of Frank Adams, or its parent, Rameses.

Many thanks again for all these new informations. It never crossed my mind that there was an iris society that could help me in the identification of this iris. DaisyDo, the last picture, the one with 'Rameses', that one really does look very much like mine. I will go on with my search with all these new trails to follow. Hugs XX

@Beetlejuice , if you click on the name associated with its picture, it will take you to the database page for Rameses, as you'll see, it was introduced in 1929, and received the Dykes Medal in 1932. That is the highest award an iris can receive, and only one such award is given out each year. So Ramses is very historically important, and many people bought it at that time. I think probably my mother had it in her garden in the 1950s. I seem to remember it. If you want to know for certain if that is what it is, I would suggest buying a known rhizome of Rameses from one of the nurseries that still have it. Do a Google search for "Ramses iris" and I think you'll find at least a couple nurseries that still do. Do not trade it as Ramses without making the direct comparison in your garden.
