It is definitely a cactus, but I don't know which. A Cereus, maybe.

That should have been Euphorbia.
In hot countries Euphorbia can be weird and wonderful.

I think I see thorns arises from "areoles", which is a Cacty distinct feature, but again I have never been able to distinguish genuses of Cactus, for me they are too difficult, all are just Cactus, or at least columnar Cactus

It is not any type of Euphorbia. The tree Euphorbias in question have paired stipular spines and lack areoles. Cactus.
