It has ate my tomatoes, clematis and some hostas before I figured out what was going on. There are many of them. Whatever they are, they are destructive, stripping the leaves off of an entire plant in a day.

Maybe a Clematis Blister Beetle? The larva do eat grasshopper eggs, so I guess they're not all bad. Here's some information from Colorado, scroll down for information on controlling them:
