This guy just showed up in my shade garden about a week ago. I think it is some sort of Erythronium, but am not sure. Can anyone help? Also, are it's roots supposed to be above ground like that? Thanks, gardening friends!Thumb of 2013-04-30/sherrilosee/b111ba

Sherry, those are indeed Erythronium. Unmistakenly spotted and colored leaves.
They look too much like my E. dens-canis but I live in Romania, so you'd probably have something similar.

I don't see roots. Must be something else's roots. These have small long-ish bulbs that go deep under. And it's not a guy. At least three guys. I don't think they multiply underground, from bulbs (like lily-of-the-valley unfortunately DO).

It sure does look like Erythronium, here are a couple of possibilities:

Erythronium albidum:
White Trout-Lily (Erythronium albidum)

E. americanum also has the spotted leaves:
Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum)
