Never had an October bloom before, not even on Stella. May never have one again, so go, Prickly Sensation!

Hurray! October blooms! Those look good. Systems of Edges was sorta open today. After all the cold nights the color was terrible.

Still having blooms on Genesta and Heavenly United We Stand and another bud on Pansy Yellow. I haven't taken more pics because they all look the same, my phone is too full and the bugs eat me up Hilarious! Turning colder this week.

BURST INTO BLOOM, did just that today. (I forget where I got it.) It's in a small pot on the deck and has survived drought and excess heat. First bloom here. I think I got it at a club plant sale. It looks more lavender than this photo.

We have a few days of heat now, there's some scapes with flowers that are close. No freeze in the 10 day forecast. My only photo is more illustrative of a bad habit than pretty. Debra Scott takes so long to open when temperatures drop that, twice now, by the time the sepals unfurl, the petals are done for.

So far, nothing of mine has sent up an October scape (not that I've been looking all that closely) but several varieties rebloomed for me in September.

~Rosy Returns
~Stella D'Oro
~Purple D'Oro

Big Time Happy sent up 11 scapes in June on through July and has not given me a rebloom scape. I wait patiently.
Does anyone know how to stop spending money on flowers?

A repeat, for sure, but what's important to note is that it was 44 degrees out this morning when I took this picture of Prickly Sensation. I thought it looked pretty darned good! It was in the upper 30's overnight, and I did have a frost cover on it. There's been a bloom nearly every day this month, with flowers lastly about a day and a half in the cooler temps.

Black Eyed Stella was not covered and had trouble opening. Regular Stella decided to send up a third round of rebloom scapes, so have covered those just to see how late I can stretch it. But there is a hard freeze forecast tonight.

What are you covering them with? I might try it tomorrow…

I have a shrub cover that I got off Amazon. The fabric is like row cover, only a little heavier, with a drawstring bottom. The material is a non-woven polyester. It lets light through, so I can just leave it on. I may add an old blanket overnight tonight, as it is going to be below freezing from midnight straight through. The biggest challenge was figuring out something to keep the cover from laying directly on the flower buds. I snapped them off Susan Weber when I first attempted to cover a scape.

The weather is holding out, nice days into the high 70s, nights in the mid 50s.

The rebloom scape on Shannara has a couple of buds left, and it's looking surprisingly good this morning. There's a sweet spot where the nights are cool enough to enhance petal width, but still warm enough to allow correct opening

A short, sneaky, late scape on Curt's Gift was a total surprise.
Thumb of 2022-10-07/JamesT/9cb524

I've seen a couple of late scapes emerging in the past couple of weeks, but I doubt they'll make it to bloom without being damaged.

Waiting for Final Touch and Stella buds to open; going to have a hard frost tomorrow night and may try to cover Final Touch just to see if I can stretch it. I do have a couple of last blooms on Pow Wow Wild Berry, Achillea Strawberry Seduction, Achillea Sunny Seduction, and the Pineapple Sage I planted in June is FINALLY blooming.
