Do you really have to dig and store dahlias inside for next year? My sister purchased a dahlia in 2021 and left it in ground and it did bloom this year. I recently noticed some of my dahlias are continuing to sprout right now. I moved about 4 of them to a better location of the garden but I really don't want to have to dig and store inside. On the other hand I don't want to loose them.

Ruthanna I am also in Philly near Bucks County. I had one dahlia years ago that made it through the winter on the Southside of my house against the wall. I have too many now and too much money invested to take a chance. I'm going to dig.
I read on the Southeastern PA Dahlia page someone is trying the cover with tarp and mulch method but I'm afraid to try it.

Ronnie, thanks for the reply. I'm going to leave them in the ground and see what happens. I only have 5 and they were cheap but 2 of them I do love and would hate to loose. I'm going to take the chance.

Leaving them in the ground exposes them to freezing temperatures and rot. I would never leave them in the ground. Digging is the price you pay for growing Dahlias.

Ruthanna if you do at least try and cover them with a tarp or lots and lots of mulch, leaves, and such. Good luck and let us know if they survive.
