Unfortunately, I have no experience with them or any growing advice. I have not seen many at a show or a judging table since the mid 90's when a new student judge we had, Michael Tibbs, brought some in via South Africa. Michael is still around.
They are breath taking, so pretty in many respects. Naturally as a judge, we were all intrigued by them and a few judges and visitors wanted to try them.
Now two points may be helpful to mention here. Once we were introduced to them, we never saw them again. My feeling is that if they survived, we should have seen them come to the judging table. They were so beautiful back them, bringing one to the table was almost like getting an automatic award! And number two, once Michael had explained how they normally grew, I was scared off for good and I never tried one. I knew that humidity would be a huge issue for me. I seem to remember lots of water, fairly good light, not necessarily sunlight, and high humidity. I also seem to recall a strong hatred of fertilizer salts building up in the media. Sphagnum I seem to recall was the media of choice.
Other then that Ted, you are on your own I am afraid. They were expensive pants back then and from what you said, they still are. They are, I think another orchid like Pleione, Habenaria etc. that grow from a corymb or tuber.
