Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Violet Stained Glass')

5th year in my garden for this plant. Beautiful bloom when it opens properly.

This cultivar has been a disappointment in my TX environment of benign neglect so far, after 4 years. Has never been close to the bud count, branching or the scape height registered.
I'm giving it one more year to perform otherwise it goes away: didn't bloom at all following the Great Freeze of 2021 and limited bloom last year.


Sometimes has funky blooms, especially earliest buds


The plant had lots of rust the first year after getting it. After the first winter with the usual freezes here, I don't have any records of VSG being a "rust bucket". Not recommended for freeze-free environments.

This one is coming in this Fall. Glad I'm waiting, after your rust description, Dave! I'll report next year, after a season of settling.

I received this in a trade here on the forum back in Sept. 2019. The plant itself, has done pretty well and is now in need of dividing. I planted another plant in the same trade right next to it 'Morning Comes Electric' which has performed much better as far as increase, and it is a much larger plant and larger clump.
The problem with both plants was that the blooms were never distinct and vivid in their colors and pattern and for two years I had a lot of trouble telling the bloom on one plant from the bloom on the other. It just seems to me both plants might be more suited for a northern climate to really bring out their best bloom colors. Since I now spray for rust and I have no early notes about rust for this plant I can't really comment on the rust factor.
It has not been a favorite of mine and I can't recommend it for this area. I only show to have two bloom photos over the years and neither one of them is very good.

I received this plant from Great Expectations in May 2023. It was planted in the Lower Fence Bed with three fans and remained that way through its first season with no bloom. I'm hoping I am North enough to get good color on this!

Beautiful flower. Unlike Seedfork, I have found the colors to be vibrant and distinct in my southern garden.
