Hello-

I ordered some tubers from one of the big websites and they were delivered today (in 7a). It's definitely too early to plant them outside and I don't want to bother with starting them indoors. What are some good options to store them for a month or so? I believe the fridge is too cold, right?

Thanks!

I usually store half of the tubers I dig in the fall in a dorm size refrigerator. It stays around 44-46 degrees, which is fine. If I buy packaged clumps in late Feb/early March I put them in a cool, dark place, like a corner of the attic to try to delay sprouting. I take them out in mid-April to let them warm and start sprouting. Mine go into planters around the first of May and planted in the garden 3-4 weeks later. But I don't worry about the ones I'll soon be receiving. They'll be fine till time to put them into planters. Do you plan to start yours early in pots or just wait and plant the bare tubers in the ground?

My plan is to go straight into the ground -- I'm still a relative newbie and transplanting worries me! Is that a needless worry?

No transplanting goes easily usually. The only problem is what I call the klutz factor of which I'm one! Usually a knee or bum in the wrong place but when I plant I cram and jam and sometimes in my hurry I topple over a plant.
Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream."
