Consult your local entomologist - or go searching online, or buy some bug books.
Here's an example of what I see on various shrubby dogwoods around the Valley. They seem to be specific to particular species, not generalists. I think these images are
Cornus racemosa.
I can't find further digital images (these are all one Dogwood species), but they are from midsummer when the crumbcrunchers typically show up. These are not big showy caterpillars, and I don't know whether they turn into moths or butterflies after they pupate. I suspect my other pictures date back to 35 mm days and are either slides or prints (still).
I have grown
Cornus drummondii,
Cornus amomum, and
Cornus racemosa in the shrubby dogwood clan.
