I have started a semp bed in a community garden spot. I was able to get a bed with a tree next to it .
My home has no mature trees and I mostly am restricted to use my proch and screen room.
I get morning sun and afternoon shade. Its been about month and so far so good.
However it is not summer yet so I have made support that I can add shade cloth to is necessary.
I have about 30 in so far. The group is from mountain crest, the second group further to the right in 2nd photo is from valleylynn. Since most people grow vegetables I put up a sigh to enlighten other gardeners about semps.

Nice set-up Ed. They are all looking good. The shade cloth should work well for you.

Some grasses and certain "open crown" plants can offer some natural protection to sempervivum at least in some lower altitude areas you can find some of these natural partial sun shades, which are important in an abrupt area at lower altitudes with hot long summer days where rains don't do much as the drainage is high due to everything being at an angle.
This is from a gorge and location in that gorge was hot and dry at around 500m/1650 feet above sea level, facing mainly south.

Checked on my community garden bed today.
I see a few are doing poorly others seem ok.
We have had more rain then usual for Tx and using a inexpensive moisture meter soil soil has a lot more moisture then semps like.
However some around them are doing ok any suggestions.
I am not the greatest photographer but I think you can get the idea.

Wow, you must have had a heavy rain, I see mud splashed on the semps. It is helpful to have a layer of chicken grit #2 on the bed and under the leaves of the semps. Did you lose your 'Borscht'? That has always been a very tough semp for me. Even in heavy long term rain. But that is also in cooler temperatures for us in the PNW.

There is also the concern of boiling roots as by definition water transfers heat better than air, so if the plants have shallow roots their roots can boil due to lots of direct sun exposure, especially in those days when some rains comes and then is back to high heat with clear skies.
Deeper roots would have a less of an issue with that because are a bit further down than than surface.
Probably this is a bigger deal with containers like I use, with a big bed like that this may only be an issue until the plants are well establish and and their roots are not close to the surface.

Some of the rains have been heavy but for a short duration.
They have only been in the ground about 6 weeks so the roots may not very deep
The Borscht is not looking good.

'Borscht' looks like it's a goner. Have you thought about putting grit down?

I picked up some chicken grit today at the local tractor supply store.
They had it in 25lb bags. Not sure how much I need but I got 4 bags.
I think that should be enough.

About 1/2" should work. Be sure to push it up under the leaves of the rosettes.

Put down 100lbs of chicken grit.
Hopefully it will help, at least it does look better. Smiling

The grit looks good, the sharp corners of the grit remind me of the natural environment around sempervivum.

update on water logged semps.
Looks like a total of 11 are bad, of that 3 have provided rossets that look like they will survive.
1 other is questionable. I have them in my garage under lights so we will see what happens.
Have 5 replacements coming from Lynn.
will update as things develop.
Ps I am really glad we have a spell checker Hurray!

The past few weeks temps have been in low 100's.
Some semps were not happy with the sun so I had to put up some shade cloth.
Its been a little cooler this week high 90's
