Can anyone identify this plant for me? It was sold to me as an hydrangea but I don't think it is.

May I just check...is that Southampton UK?
There are several different sp of Hydrangea....leaves look different depending which one it is.
I think it is a Hydrangea.

Clerodendrum bungei ..leaves are unpleasantly scented when crushed.

Actinidia leaves are alternate.
Mystery plant leaves appear opposite.

Hi
Thanks for your replies. It was sold to me as Hydrangea Aspera Robusta but I didn't think that was correct as Aspera leaves I have seen (I have one in the garden in Southampton UK) are quite different. However it was an attractive plant so I thought I would take a chance. A plant identification app suggested Hydrangea or Bartlettina but neither looks correct to me. Actinidia Chinensis is the most similar plant I could find. We had a cold winter this year so I may never know as it is just a stick at present albeit with some green. So I'll wait and see what happens.

Could it be Hydrangea hydrangeoides?

Hi I don't think it is Hydrangea hydrangeoides but it is similar enough to convince me it is an hydrangea. The closest I have been able to get is Hydrangea macrophylla 'Lady in Red' which looks similar in photos. I will contact an Hydrangea specialist to see if he/she can identify it.

Thanks

I fear rthat you will need to be patient and wait for flowers.
As far as I know all Hydrangea macrophylla leaves are the same./similar
The difference is the colour of the flowers .

https://www.google.com/search?...

Your leaf appears to be soft, hairy , with hairs on the edges.
This would rule out Hydrangea macrophylla.
It would not rule out other Hydrangea sp.
