Thread OP
PA (Zone 6a)
Is there someone in zone 6 who has sucessfully overwintered their potted elephant ears (not growing them as houseplants during the cold season and NOT removing them from their pots, since some things I've read say this is possible), and who wouldn't mind answering my questions about this? I have seen so much confusing, conflicting info on you tube and other sites about this subject that my head is spinning, and I still don't know the best/easiest way to do this. Time is of the essence, since it's getting colder at night!! Thanks so much for your help!!!!!!

* Allow your plant(s) to dry down in anticipation of a hard frost.
* Leave your potted plants outdoors until they get knocked back by a hard frost.
* Lift the corm(s) from the soil, remove the leaves and green portion of the stems, and set the corms on a piece of cardboard or newspapers to dry, turning the corms every few days so they dry evenly.
* After about 2 weeks, put the corms in a cardboard box partially filled with peat moss, situating the corms so they are not touching other corms.
* Fill with additional peat moss so the corms are covered by about an inch or so.
* Come spring, pot up the corms about 2 weeks before your estimated last frost date and water lightly. Move the plants outdoors when night temps are reliably above 55*.
* They are nitrogen hogs, so fertilize regularly - about every 3rd or 4th time you water (if you're watering correctly).

I leave mine in its container, when the foliage dies down I place the container in a cool dark spot (for me it is the basement, a garage would probably work). I water them sparingly every month, come spring, bring them out and they come back.
Not zone 6 (Z4) I'm sure it would work for you.

RJ described what I used to do in OH, Z5. I don't think the zone matters in an unheated basement. The cooler, the better, as long as it is above freezing. Cooler is better because warmer air could cause premature re-growth. Although they go completely dormant here, it's not necessary to dig them up.

I don't doubt that what Al said will be successful too, but sounds like a lot more work than picking up a pot after frost has knocked off the current foliage and carrying it to the basement. A covered basement window well should also work. I used to store several Z8+ plants that way in Z5.

You can also do this with many other Z8+ plants that go dormant like Cannas, Gladiolus, Brugmansia.
