Hi everyone,

Just wondering on the best course of action as this healthy stem is brown /dry at base, should I cut off or leave as it appears to be growing / still healthy with a baby stem growing

Yes, the brown part is dead. Cut the green part off, so that no brown is still attached. Let it dry at least overnight, then stick it back into the soil, burying the cut end at least an inch. Doing that periodically even if nothing is wrong can help keep the pot full of fresh new growth - or you can fashion some kind of trellis/support to have a more upright looking pot, with your periodic guidance.

Bob, thank you for the kind comment, even if it is not true. Thank you for the acorns & best luck with your plant!

I think it is this one (link to pics in the database on this site):
Rhipsalis elliptica

I am flabbergasted!

Beautiful plant, Ursula!
When I do a Google search for "Red Epiphyllum", this picture also comes up on an Etsy seller named Wendy in Half Moon Bay, California. There may be others!
So, great looking plant, great photo, seems like it's quite popular. Smiling
(Robert did say "like" this photo, but it must have been a surprise for you!)

Yes, "like"!
I looked at his post/pic a little closer and kinda blinked. Then I thought it had a familiar look to it, and I realized I took this pic years ago.
No wonder I liked it, I always enjoyed this Epiphyllum! I still grow it! Smiling

Ursula, I can't get over the number of flowers and the compact form with many branches. I guess the one I have just isn't 'improved' that way.
Plant it and they will come.

Sally, I learned the secret to blooming these types of Epiphyllums is a cool winter storage, put it to sleep!
German Epiphyllum growers overwintered those plants in their cold stone cellars. My garage is about as close to that as possible, temps go down to the low forties. I think that helps.

More like a shock.

If you have ever put anything on the internet (intentionally or unintentionally, Google your name and put .... behind it and see what you come up with.

I shared photos with a group trying to find all the residents of the cemetery in Post Oak Mission once (my great grandmother was buried there). I didn't realize they were going to 'publish' my photos but they showed up on the internet for years.

Oh My Gosh! I just Googled Post Oak Mission Cemetery and my photos are still there! That was 30 years ago!

I also have some orchid photos out there. Sigh!

I wondered how you overwintered them in New Jersey. Beautiful plant!

Your plant is just gorgeous, Ursula... all those flowers! And that cold dormant period is important for so many plants to set flowers. It apparently loves the care it's getting.
