Yes, garbage cans make wonderful containers for just about anything. Here is my Hawaiian Ti that I put in an old garbage can last winter.

Looks Great! Yes, I have 3 big black/brown garbage cans on the property that I use as planters for some of my Elephant Ears (colocasia). Getting height into the garden is a problem for me, and these lift the plants up so when they get going they really look spectacular. I have all three tucked into places where the cans aren't really visible and so far nobody has asked me what garbage cans are doing all over the place *ha*.

I really like that garbage can planter idea. Even old rusted out metal cans could be painted (green, brown? and used as well draining planters.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

A hosta nursery near me had hostas planted in just about anything: old washtubs, big buckets, big cans, even in an old wringer washing machine! I think as long as you're careful about placement and color, most things can work.
