In regions where the soil freezes, fall is generally not the best time to plant evergreens. While roots scramble to establish before winter, there isn't enough time for foliage to adapt to a different, harsher climate.
enter Wilt Pruf. A good idea for this first winter to help prevent desiccation. Do read the directions. As I recall, it needs to be above 40°F at application and until it dries. If the directions say to do the undersides of the leaves, than do it. Otherwise, apply and whatever gets wet is fine. I believe a second applications is recommended in late winter, if and when temps are above 40.
