I found this one plant behind the garage while I was cleaning up yesterday, probably another gift from the birds. The only things I've been moving back there are some fennel, milkweed, and Queen Anne's Lace. I know it's all dried up, but I had no idea it was back there. The leaves look like there might have been a lighter colored striped down the center of them. There are daylily leaves just behind and in front left of it.

Looks like something found growing under a bird feeder.

It's nowhere near a feeder. The closest feeders have just thistle and peanuts in the shell during the summer, furthest have sunflowers and safflower and that's it, I don't ever buy any mixed seeds. But of course that doesn't mean a bird didn't drop it from somewhere else.

Does that mean they'll eat it? Although I would expect those stems to be near empty like the pokeberries are picked clean if they liked it.

Looks like millet... (sorghum is a type of millet).

As above, I suspect that it came from a feeder... although... some people put out the entire seedhead, and other people plant millet as an ornamental.

Could have been carried by a squirrel.
The birds may be waiting for the seed to mature...
I planted millet at my house this summer, and it isn't being eaten by the birds yet either... but.. the seed isn't quite mature either...
I may attempt picking and cooking...

Supposed to be a superfood... As well as something able to grow in the dry sand w/o dumping a ton of water on it.

I guess sorghum.
There can be a stray seed in feed now and then, of course.
I think it was plain green in life, the center vein just looking different now.

Amending- I didn't realize millet could have a 'spray' type seed head. So, millet/sorghum...
Plant it and they will come.

I didn't pull it out when cleaning up or even cut it. I'll let it be and see if the birds ever do eat it, although it looks pretty ripe to me (but what do I know about sorghum or millet). That would be the only reason I'd let it stay, I have no interest in picking, preparing and trying to eat bird seed myself. Hilarious!

I agree that it's Sorghum of some type and likely a gift from a passing bird. Grain Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is a common ingredient in birdseed mixes.

Uh oh.... time to take those cultural blinders off! Millet is also grown for human consumption. Although, I wouldn't know if it's a different cultivar/hybrid from the "birdseed" type. One of my favorite breads has millet in it, and it would certainly be lacking without it.

I had read about millet being a great grain to grow with global warming because it doesn't require much water. Still not eating it (unless it's disguised in some store-bought bread).

If it remains uneaten, I'll eventually pull it. I'd rather have that useless space behind the garage filled with things that will provide food for birds. I just need to remember to check on it during fall and winter.

It's from Great Harvest Bakery. Since they are all over the country, I assume they're all the same? this one is called High 5 Fiber - fresh milled whole grain wheat flour, water, flax seeds, honey, millet, wheat bran, oat bran, yeast, sunflower seeds, salt.

Day old stuff half price.

Favorite all purpose store bought (not bakery) bread: New England Brown bread.

Oh how I wish we had a Great Harvest Bread Company near us. My youngest sister lived in the Marietta, Ga area for many, many years and whenever I visited her, we'd go to Great Harvest for lunch and to buy bread. Everything they make is really delicious but my favorite breads were rhw honey wheat (with sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds) and the Cinnamon Chip bread. Lovey dubby

It's sad that the closest one to me is 95 miles away in Orlando. Sad

The birds found my millet planting...
Ate most of the seed seemingly overnight...

They have ways of knowing when the seed turns ready...
like when the goldfinches show up and wait on the poppy seed to be ready...
Like when the birds suddenly strip off all the holly berries...

I've cleaned up most everything back there except things that might reseed that I want and the millet. I have been checking on it while we've had such a nice warm few days and so far it's still uneaten. I even got to sit outside and read last night in the dark without being dinner for mosquitos!
