Petchoa - the New Kid in Town

By Joannabanana
June 18, 2013

XPetchoa is a recent new genus. The plants are a genetic cross between a petunia and calibrachoa. The Petchoa is a milestone in plant breeding and the result is a combination of the best characteristics of both the petunia and the calibrachoa. It is an amazing plant for home gardeners who enjoy hanging baskets loaded with blooms all season.

Great article and a lovely new plant but I have a question. Calibrachoa is considered an annual here, so are petunias; I am assuming this pretty new cross is also an annual. Do you know its hardiness zones?

They are perennials in Zone 10 and are semi-evergreen. But you are right, they are treated as annuals all around the world.

Thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting this article to show up in perennial week, but since it has, I will take more photos of the Petchoas in my garden. I have put them in all the window boxes on the house and in a big pot in my container garden near my greenhouse. If it's not raining later, I will take more photos.
You may have better luck finding it sold as a hanging basket and not as individual potted plants. You may also find that you may have to educate the garden centre staff since they may be unaware of what the Pechoas are. If the baskets do not have a variety tag, a great way to tell it is a petchoa is strong color blooms, big petunia size blooms, foliage is non-sticky and small leaf. Flowers are the size of multiflora petunias and plant foliage looks more like calibrachoa.

These photos are from 2010. The Petchoa is darker pink to the right of the Vista Bubblegum petunia pot

I called around this morning and I can't find it locally, then I looked through all the online companies that sponsored this week's perennial raffle - then I realized they sold mostly perennials - so then I finally found Petchoa available in GardenHarvestSupply.com. They also had gorgeous pictures and there's a terra cotta color that's to die for.

I'll keep looking for it; it's going to be a popular plant for sure.

I wonder how they would do in the Texas heat? Petunias are a 'winter' basket around here and die off quickly in the spring for me.

Right now I'm working on vincas in my baskets because it's too hot for anything else. Crying
