I live in zone 6 and my snapdragons are still green in February. I think they might survive the winter. When should I cut them back? In the photo I'm holding the stems that flowered in the fall and they are kind of brownish-greenish. There are new green leaves and stems growing already from the original stem. Is it safe to cut the back the old stem now in February, or should I wait until spring is here? The last day of frost in my area is May 3rd. Thanks in advance!

Hi Zee,
I would imagine you could cut them back any time you wanted to. Trim them now or wait a month or two. I don't think they care. I started planting a patch of them about 9 years ago. I grow the shorter ones because we have serious winds pretty often here and the taller ones all blow down. Added more for a few years. Here they are perennials and stay green like yours all year. So these are all 7-9 years old.

I see sporadic blooms all year long. And then 3-4 times a year they all bloom at once like crazy. Gosh, it's pretty. In the beginning I didn't have time to deadhead them and only trimmed them when they all began looking brown like yours. But once I had so many I started just using my hedge trimmers to cut them all back pretty quickly after a major bloom. They don't seem to care either way. They just keep doing their thing. I just love that.

Here's a thread with lots of snapdragon info that will help you. Happy gardening.
