Is there a spray that can be used to control grass/weeds in a large Iris bed?

Not, in my experience, without harming the irises.

Grass-B-Gone. There are several members here who have used it to kill grass around the irises and I used it last year with no ill effects on mine. BUT, if you use it you need to still get in there and pull the grass out. The product kills the grass but the roots are still there and need to be pulled. This just makes it easier so the grass isn't still growing while you weed.

We have and use FREEHAND. It is very effective. But the essential in all pre-emergents is that you apply just before or as soon as the 'weeds" begin germinating or just have sprouted. Most effective if you apply it just before a rain or you will have to water it into the soil. I could not live without it in large plantings. Besides irises I use it in my large plantings of roses effectively. All these pre-emergents are grandular. I put holes with a nail in a 2 lb. coffee can and shake it over the beds.

I haven't heard about Freehand before, thanks. I have used Grass B Gon for several years, we have quack grass here and without it, I'd never be able to have as many gardens as I have. It will not harm peonies, lilies or daylilies. It works best if sprayed on while it's growing, but it does take a while for the grass to die, but it will die. You have to give it time. I know people down South of me who use in on Bermuda grass and it works on that too.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I'm amazed that *anything* works on Bermuda grass! Blinking We had it at our last 2 houses, and I was so glad to escape it with this house.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom
