Hello all and a VERY good day to you!

I have a few flats of seedlings that are emerging in the cold frame. All of my watering cans are not gentle enough to avoid damage so I need a watering can that has a very fine nozzle. I cannot seem to find one however. May I please get some recommendations on any watering can that would be good for seedlings?

Thank you so very kindly in advance!
Benny

I never top water seeds or seedlings. I set the seed trays in shallow pans.

Watering from the bottom is good. Another option is to use a mister. They are great for seedlings. This is the one I use, but there are a lot of others available to choose from.

Edited to add that I got the idea from watching Laura of Garden Answer YouTube videos. She has an online store where they have started selling the garden products that she finds the most useful and the sprayer is one of them. She uses a mesto 3132GR mister but it is out of stock right now in her online store, probably available at amazon though.

I agree

You won't find a water can gentle enough that works for flats of seedlings- the droplets are too big, and dryer seed starting media around seedlings tends to 'lift-off' (float) as you top water, sometimes dislodging your seedlings- if you don't have a very fine spray.

I bottom water almost exclusively, but also use a misting nozzle attached to a hose. A misting nozzle is not to be confused with a spray bottle, which will be totally ineffective for your seedlings, as a misting bottle won't saturate the soil to any depth.

Also- to clarify- bottom watering IS NOT allowing seedlings to sit in trays of water constantly!
Allow them to soak up water from the bottom tray until soil is saturated, then remove them from the water and let the trays then drain.

Bottom water is my recommendation. You don't need expensive trays...
For years I've used an old plastic 'underbed' storage bin as my bottom watering tray.
Like this one- you might have several similar options lying around or pick up any kind of tray or storage bin at a second hand store.

Bottom watering is the best. But for a quick "touch up", better than the misting, I would use a syringe (no needle). 60ml is my favorite size. You don't have to get the foliage wet, so there is less chance of disease and things falling over. You can get them at your local pharmacy.

I use a watering can with a long thin spout, those are easiest to control and pour very slowly to not disturb the dirt too much and to reach over rows of seedlings. They're metal or copper, I've never seen a plastic one with a thin enough spout. My favorite copper one got dented during a move, this was the replacement that works well for me. For when seedlings are first germinating though, it's usually best to use a sprayer since you don't want to drench the soil to avoid rot.

Hello all and a very good morning to you! THANK YOU so much for all these wonderful ideas. I truly appreciate the help here.

I do have a couple syringes which I am going to try using. I am also going to look into the long watering can and the mister. Each will prove useful.

@aspenhill

Do you have a link to Laura's site?

I truly thank you all again. You have been most kind and helpful. Smiling

I love watching Laura's videos, she's very down to earth and demonstrates everything she's doing wonderfully. Here's some background info about how she got started, and her YouTube page with all her videos. I would absolutely love to visit her property, it seems enormous.

I am so addicted to Garden Answer. She posts a new video every weekday morning at 7:00 am eastern time, skips Saturday, and then a recap video q&a session for questions that came up during the weekday videos. I sit down every morning and watch her while I eat my breakfast. I totally enjoy her, her family, and the content of the videos.
