Does anybody know of a sterile Aster? I love them but hate how much they spread. Thanks

Plants of the Aster family produce tons and tons of seed, but they are notorious for it mostly being nearly all chaff. Thank goodness, think of the problems we would have if it were all viable!!! If you remove the old flower heads before they open to fluff, you'll catch a lot of it before it can spread.

Not sure what size aster your looking for, but I've grown my low gowning Snow Flurry Aster for 24 years, never deadhead, and never found a seedling.

Thank you Leftwood for your reply and suggestion of snow flurry. What a pretty little plant! I'm looking for a tall variety in purple or blue that's sterile. I grew the woods Aster years ago and had so many baby plants it felt like a weed. I have arthritic hands and would like to find some thing I don't have to shear back or deadhead. I don't know if it's out there but I sure hope so!

There should be something- I bought a mixed planter one fall at a big box with asters that sound like what you want. I may not have a note of the name though. I'll check. (I know what you mean about wood asters)
..
Sometimes I amaze myself- here's my note for you to research this one
Fall Aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Henry III')

Sadly I cannot say how hardy they are- I divided up the pots at some point and the asters didn't survive.
Plant it and they will come.

Thanks Sally,
I'm going to do some research into this and see what I can find. The color sure is rich and luscious. It's what I'm envisioning.
