That plant looks like how my knees feel. I have a plant that's not as twisty as this, but it's scapes will turn at right angles to avoid a taller scape, then make another right angle turn to go back up when it clears what's in its way. I've aften thought if I put blockers in the right place I could make squares and spirals. Seems like a lot of work, but maybe one of these years. Is that a registered plant or one of your seedlings?

Murphy, 05 - 59" La 6" dor.dip. Reblooms. Every scape is crooked or loops. Golden orange, with red eye. Doubles about 30% to 50% of the time, with good conditions.

Completely distinctive, with 59" scapes, every one with a crook, bend, or even loop. You read that correctly. Nothing like it in your garden! Late bloom and good color, with green throat, complete the package. Scapes do lean, and twist, and some fall, but then grow toward the sun, with 15 buds, and 2 branches. Fertile, parents unknown. Exhibition Judges don't know what to do when this is on the show table.

2022 note: Scapes are crooked. However, some are laid out on the ground. Maybe this will improve as the plant matures.

What a strange daylily! It is definitely unique. What does the 23W29 mean? I assume 23 is the year, but can't figure out the rest. Do you have any seedlings from it?

@blue23rose 23W29 is the year and ISO week, my brain works better in weeks rather than days. Also, I like clocks that display days rather than hours:) And, no I do not have any seedlings from it. I have never met Jim Murphy or Margo Reed, but I do like their daylilies. I have 18 Margo daylies and 24 of Jim's.

Chances are, most exhibitors would never show this plant, first because almost all shows are held during early to mid season and this one blooms late.Secondly, with scapes that tall, exhibitors are allowed to cut a part of the scape off and place it beside the exhibit.

I've judged many daylily shows for many years, ( in Jim Murphy's home region ) and have never seen seen it exhibited. But I have seen a lot of Margo and Jim's lates in bloom. It's kinda cool to leave your own garden sometime in August where you might have 3-4 still blooming and arrive at Woodhenge to see several hundred in bloom. Years ago, I had Jim pose beside a scape of Crooked when it was still in their seedling bed. It was before digital, so I can't find it.
