Pretty iris! Unfortunately, there are many historic light blue irises--I think it will be impossible to identify. You could browse the Historic Iris Preservation Society iris gallery for potential cultivars, but it could also be an unregistered seedling.
Is this the first year bloom? Sometimes first year blooms are a little misshapen or off color, so that may make identification harder.
Even if you find a potential match, you must purchase the known iris from a reputable vendor and grow it along side your NOID to compare to make sure it is an exact match.
I would just grow the iris and enjoy it, without a name. Smiling

You're going to have a tough but not impossible time trying to ID that historic. I bid you good luck on your search!

Seller said her mom bought "a bag of iris" at a flea mkt 30+ years ago and this o e likely came from that batch. Agh, I went cheap and it has cost me 1 year of no iris show.

If it is any consolation, old and cheap irises tend to be pretty vigorous once they get going. Crossing Fingers!

Can you get a better picture in focus of it close up? So many details that can't be seen. Also, have you used Roundup around it? There are a couple things in how the top flower looks that may suggest some Roundup damage. Basically the standards can look a little thicker, and lose some color along the edges with light damage.. I can't tell for sure from your picture.

Finally got a new bloom. Hope this pic is helpful. Is that even an iris germanica?

Doing a quick google search. It seems to be an Iris Douglasiana. I've never heard of I. Douglas is a bit I'm relatively new to irises in general. Only ones I know well are LA irises.

This is what I found

About Douglas Iris (Iris douglasiana)
The Douglas Iris (Iris douglasiana) is a common and attractive wildflower of the coastal regions of Northern and Central California and Southern Oregon, with scattered locations inland. The Douglas Iris grows mainly at lower elevations, below 330 feet, though it is occasionally found at heights of up to 3,300 feet.

It is most common in grasslands near the coast; it is regarded as a noxious weed in pastures, because it forms clumps that inhibit other vegetation, and its leaves are bitter and unpalatable to cattle.

Douglas Iris prefers part or full shade and richer soils and is fast growing near the coast. If not planted next to a creek or in a naturally wet area, it likes summer water every 2 to 4 weeks. It is more drought tolerant near the coast where it benefits from cooler temperatures and fog. The flowers can be highly variable in color, and many cultivars are available.

Nope, iris Douglasiana is a beardless iris, and yours definitely has beards.

You can search for characteristics in the NGA database at https://garden.org/plants/grou... , but I suspect you may nevet ID this one. Start by measuring its height to the top of its bloom. Tall Beardeds are generally 27.5" or above. But sometimes they bloom shorter if conditions are not ideal. See https://www.irises.org/gardene... for heights of the other bearded iris classes. It looks like the beards on yours shade from yellow to white. Notice the veination on yours, as well as the color shading on the lower falls and the blue/white color pattern on the styles.

I second Sherry's question about past use of Roundup--the bloom does kind of have that look. Did you use anything last year or this spring to control weeds?

That particular area tends to get weedy so DH has been known to spray RU carefully b/c we have lots of ornamentals there.

I can see deformed growth due to RU but blue veining? That looks natural to me.

Round up damage can look very pretty, but it's really hard to identify an Iris if the only pictures show that damage. Your iris is probably blue. Damage shows up first on the outer edges, and continues to lighten until mainly the veins are left with color.
Pictures from the front, or side are the most helpful in putting an ID on an Iris.. Those from the top, not so much. We need to see the shape of the falls, and the form of the flowers, haft markings, beard (is it all yellow, or orange in the throat? Is it tipped in blue, or forming a point? etc..).. Sometimes an ID can come down to very minute details, so clear pictures showing as much as possible, is important.

Yes, looks like typical Roundup damage. Makes a very stylized bloom, which is actually sort of pretty, but not its usual bloom. I think you'll need to wait until next year to have more normal blooms for identification.
