I have brown looking scale on my scape and buds of a couple of my plant. Never had this before. It caused the bud to fall off. I live in Louisiana zone 9A.

phyllischate,
That is something I have never seen on a daylily. I hope I never see that in my garden, I have enough pests already. I really do hope someone on here has an answer.

Looks alarming, hopefully local problem. I am gonna take a wild guess and say chlorinated pool water is not safe for plants.

I'm sorry I cannot help as I have never seen anything like that on daylily buds.

I don't use chlorinated pool water to water my lilies and they e been planted there for many years. It has never affected them before.

When I get something on my daylilies that I've never seen, I always spray them wtih a 3 in 1 spray, like Ortho 3 in 1. It doesn't always work, but it's kind of amazing how often it does work. A couple years back I has something turning my buds black and deforming them. 3 in 1 stopped whatever it was from spreading, and most of the buds that weren't too far gone pulled through and bloomed.

So if you don't get a real answer, it's something to try.

Gosh, that is something I've never seen either. Are the affected plants near each other?

I've seen something like that, an article by Stout attributed damage like it on daylilies to thrips. When I tapped these buds on a piece of white printer paper some thrips did come running out. They're very tiny.

See the AHS Daylily Dictionary here
https://daylilies.org/daylily-...

I also see leafminer on a leaf in the ID pic but they wouldn't cause the damage in question.

From the information that @Sooby provided I found the short article by Stout on thrips on daylilies. It can be read at the Internet Archive,

https://archive.org/details/mo...

[Edit #1] Insecticidal soap spray (eg. Safer's) is apparently effective on thrips.

[Edit #2] You can learn more about thrips and daylilies if you are a member of the American Hemerocallis Society. In the society's archives of the Daylily Journal there is an article by Pat [Hortaholic] (a member of the daylily forum here). The article is "ONE THRIPS*, TWO THRIPS" in Pat Answers, Spring 1998 Daylily Journal, Vol. 53, No. 1, beginning on page 67.
