Thread OP

Hi! I'm brand new to this forum. Thanks for letting me join!

Has anyone had any experience with a Virginia Creeper vine? I'm thinking of letting it grow over a satellite dish gazebo. Thanks for your input.

I have no experience growing it but I've seen its impressive / massive vines in areas where it grows wild on its own.

I understand it can be a bit obnoxious in some areas, like Florida. It's definitely quite attractive, tho. Have you looked at the photos in the database?

I was trying not to use the ā€Iā€ word hahaha - I like obnoxious, however, it works well.

Well, actually I started to use the "I" word, but decided it wasn't necessarily appropriate, given we don't know whereabouts AuntSissy is located. Smiling

Thanks everyone for your messages. I'm in Southern Idaho where it is dry. Yes, I've looked for photos of the Virginia Creeper. I'm planning on planting the creeper behind a satellite gazebo that isn't up yet. I'm thinking that it will make a nice over for it.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I don't have convenient access to the Internet, so my posts are sporadic. Smiling

It's definitely obnoxious in Florida and other Southern states and yes very invasive in the right climate and impossible to get rid of once it has established itself. I did a quick check of your states invasive plants list and it's not on there so you should be ok.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Yes, do not plant it where it becomes invasive. Oklahoma is one of those places. I had to pay a nice young man a great deal of money to stop it from taking over my fences, trees, gardens, walkways and the telephone pole. I actually hate it . For a little gazebo I would choose ivy.

We love Virginia creeper! We are in North Texas, it is everywhere, and makes it green and lovely. We have one climbing the wall of our house. Many times, it was removed by mistake when we trimmed the bush which is nearby the wall - but it came back! We are not very good gardeners, and don't manage growing plants properly, therefore we have respect towards this one, that doesn't require any attention, it's quite self-sufficient and independent. We did not plant it, it came with the house, and it took some time till we learned its name and identity (in fact, we were told it's Virginia Creeper, I would not take credit for identifying any plant myself, I am attaching some pictures here). This creeper makes the walls of the house look green and living - at least in summer. We did not have any problems with it taking over anything else, it's well behaved so far, and stays between the wall and the bushes.
