Gorgeous, Drew. Any sign of it putting up a flower? I have heard the fruit really is Deliciosa, tasting something like lychee.

When I've looked at your pots Drew, I've been thinking wayyy too small. Do you own a forklift?

Hello Drew,

Do you grow these outdoors year round ? Wow. This is my first year with my two philos and large alocasia .

I almost feel like leaving my monstera deliciosa outdoors this winter. I love your photos, just great. I lurk some on this forum, but just wanted to say your place looks like a jungle, and just as beautiful.

A.

Welcome, Gourd. We're glad you found us. Tell us what zone you're in to give us a better idea of whether you can leave your plants out in the winter.

Thank you, I'm in zones 7/8a, and have some micro climate areas , I'm in Southern NM, on the border of El Paso, TX and NM. The passiflora Caruela stays evergreen in our backyard, we get into the teens very rarely and for just a few hours.

I've put in one calidora in the ground which I'll leave in the soil to see if it makes it and I have not divided the portora , so that will stay indoors.

Thank you for the warm welcome. There is so much information that is extremely helpful to me. I think I spent an hour just reading posts on here.

Ain't happening in Zone 7-8A. Unless you cover with shredded leaves in the Winter like I do my Philodendron bipinnatifidum. (It is in the ground.) If you wanted to plant your Monstera, you could do that. I planted my P. bipinnatifidum when it was about 7' in diameter.

Just cover your Mac. type Alocasias (Odora, Calidora, Macrorrhizos, Portora and such with a couple of feet of shredded leaves in the late Fall when it starts getting down in the upper to sometimes middle 30's and keep on till late Winter. Start moving the leaves back away from the stem on warm sunny days so your soil can start warming up and growth should start earlier in the Spring. Of course; slide the leaves back into place at night to retain that warmth. Don't uncover at all on cloudy, rainy days, as you would know.

So right, Drew. The leaf mulch will help a lot, but there is a double whammy keeping a fleshy tropical plant outdoors through your high desert winter, Antoinette. Cold plus dessication. You will have to make sure that plant doesn't dry out as well as keeping it from freezing. Terribly low humidity out there esp. in winter.

When we lived in Salt Lake City, the south side of my house was at least a zone warmer than the rest. It did get sun most of the afternoons in winter, and also got snow and snowmelt dripping off the roof above there. The house acts as a 'heat sink' collecting warmth in the daytime and radiating it at night. Plus of course on cold nights you are heating the house inside anyway, so some of that heat escapes.

i would think your best chance of keeping your Monstera going would be if you can situate it against a south-facing wall, and water it lightly at least once a week, plus a deep, moist mulch of leaves or other dark colored, insulating material. Peat moss might help, if you can't find a couple of wheelbarrows full of leaf mulch. But peat is hard to keep moist, and when it dries, it's hard to wet again as well.

Hmmm............you mean mine could get that big? Bigger pots are no problem for me, even tho I need to haul everything in before first frost. Loader tractor and big g'house can help lots. Green Grin! I have 2 brugs in 24 inch pots, and if need be, I "can" move those myself. Just don't ask me to cough afterwards............LOLOL

Wow! I need to show that photo to MY plant. LOL I repotted it into a 20 inch pot. Because it was growing rather drunken-looking, I had to put the whole thing in the new pot almost vertically in order to make the plant itself straight. I think it will be fine, it has not complained. :>)
