I have had several that I got rid of over the years, due to low bud count, wouldn't increase, splotchy, bloomed in the foliage, too sprawlish, weak scapes ect.
Some of them have pretty blooms but they bloom down in the foliage, I started cutting the foliage back and the plant did fine, and the blooms were more visible that way, and I can't tell it hurt them at all. I have Mae Graham but I am considering tossing it. It seems to bloom all over the place, one stalk gets tallish, the next stays in the foliage and one even grew out sideways. This was it's second year, and it even increased well, I would say a 'clump'.
any ideas on that?

Seriously, I used to grow anywhere from 800-900 named and another few thousand seedlings. But I was constantly rotating them, so over the years, I really have no idea how many named ones I grew. At least a couple thousand I would think.

Then I got a disease that affects the nervous system. Cannot use a shovel, can't divide, can't take care of the beds like I used to.

I had to pare WAY down... now I have "the best of the best of the best".... some are oldies, some new, some of my seedlings. I have around 100 total now.

It was VERY hard to make the cuts. Felt like I was giving away old friends. I couldn't even dig and sell them as I physically could not do it. I called up the woman who had been my best customer and said they are yours if you can come get them.

But, the ones I have left --- I really really like.

Some I got rid of due to branching, or bud count. Some because they increased to fast - remember I can't dig, so slower increase means I don't have to hire someone to dig/divide as often. Some I had for over 10 years and felt I could part with.

It was very hard, and makes me get tears in my eyes just thinking about all the great ones I had to cut out.

Oh, yes I am in the process of it now. It is not too hard mainly because they are not bloom and so the image of what they look like in full flower will be fuzzy when I go to dig em out and ship em out. I keep saying to myself over and over .YOU HAVE TO! or no more new daylilies.

daylily, your story makes me sad. my sis had a nervous system disease RSD so I know how hard and painful it can be at times.

Kathy, RSD is what I have. I have had it since 2001. It is very difficult. But, you have to try to find things you enjoy and can do. I can't grow many daylilies, but I still enjoy seeing them, and photographing them, and talking about them!

My sis had it since 1993. She was very good at drawing before she got hurt and ended up RSD. Your right it is diffcult and alot of people still do not understand it. I am glad you have this cubit and can enjoy at least some daylilies. I used to dig up cosmos , zinnias and other plants for my sis . And I do think to this day that she was really getting to be a gardener. Are you in any of the support groups?

Jules, Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge of daylilies with us, your enthusiasm for growing daylilies, and your time to administer this forum. You have made it a welcoming place to be. I have a friend at church who has RSD. She is in constant pain, and sometimes it is almost unbearable; but, she is an inspiration to us all. She never gives up and is always thinking about someone else.

but between the kiddos and the dog and the housework, and homeschool, and my son is disabled, I don't work either so not alot of money,
I just have to keep them 'weeded' out to the 'best'
Anything that doesn't meet my expectations is tossed.
I don't hybridize either, no room for that! I figure I'll let someone else do that work, and after *they* weed out the not-so's I can buy them!

Kathy, the only one I visit regularly is NeuroTalk. During the past year, I have been training a service dog. She has become such a help to me. I don't think I will ever get her to divide daylilies !!

You homeschool! I homeschooled my 4 kids from 1995 to 2007 so you do have plenty do. Probably alot of those days you don't know if you are coming or going???

Now if you plant them daylilies closer you might not have to weed much, someone told me they have their DLS really close so they don't have to weed. I have not tried it though, can't fathom the thought of planting more then I will have to.

well I tried planting closer but found I didn't like it. Would probably work great for ROWS. but i have a layout all over kind of bed, with other flowers too.
Plant them too close and I find you have trouble getting 'in' to service them. Can't reach them, can't photo, can't dead head, just a jungle like mass.

You are correct about the homeschooling thing, some days I think it is total bust lol

And, when it comes time to dig and divide, you won't be able to tell which fans belong to which plant!

I guess if they were too close that could be the case.

Last year I dug out several DL that had never bloomed for me and gave them away and then a cple I did not care much for I dug out for trades. Seems like there is always someone out there that does like the ones you don't so that helped me out. French Lingerae will go this year as has never bloomed. I keep holding on to some hoping but need the room for better ones. I feel bad with each one though.

So far the only ones I have given away were Kwansa's that came with the house, and some Ditch lilies that I have returned to the side of the road LOL.

ditto on the ditchies, they were sent packin' here too. Too invasive for me.
I got rid of Christmas Is, sent it to the compost pile last summer. I had it for 3 years, and it only had a few blooms, never got a scape over 10 inches tall.
I also got rid of When I Dream, same thing, just never did anything but sit there.
I have Burning Angel now, that is splotchy to me, I think it would do better south of here, the form is nice and it's ruffled, but the color is not right for me.

Well I purchased Spiney Sea Urchin 3 years ago and it has yet to bloom. This summer will be the determining factor on whether or not I will keep it. It is sulking in my climate and may have to go south.

I agree that some need a different climate and it is not that they are not a good plant or pretty bloom. They just like it somewhere else so I would rather trade that compost unless invasive like the ditchlily.

My ditch lilies are now either by the side of the road again, although I do still have a few in big pots for memory sake.

I'm still learning what likes it here and what doesn't. I've added hundreds of new daylilies to my gardens in the last 3 years. I have some that haven't bloomed yet. Maybe they're sulking? I did have a couple that I got as bonus plants that I traded away for something else. They just weren't my cup of tea. Though I have thought that about others and changed my mind after seeing them in my garden. Anymore, I'm going to wait and see if I really don't like something after it's grown here for a couple of years before I go giving it away.
