CHRISTMAS PAST, a CHRISTMAS STORY

It was CHRISTMAS TIME and MOM AND ME were getting ready to go to the CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION. We had already put up our tree on CHRISTMAS EVE and had A QUIET CHRISTMAS MORNING .

We were ready to see friends on CHRISTMAS DAY. Dressed in our CHRISTMAS COLORS, we would have CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT with our FAVORITE ONE, the CHRISTMAS GATHERING party. Putting up the CHRISTMAS TREE , adding a CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT while singing a CHRISTMAS JINGLE.

Dinner featured TURKEY LURKEY and DUCK DUCK GOOSE with DUCK SAUCE . Later there would be CHRISTMAS PIE and CHRISTMAS CANDY. Of course, plenty of CHRISTMAS CHEER from AGED MULBERRY WINE to insure lots of CHRISTMAS JOY.

I really liked to SINGALONG with the SONG AND DANCE troop. I think it was the BUBBLES IN THE WINE that got me going. We had a choice of CALIFORNIA WINE or CANADIAN RED WINE . CHRISTMAS IS such a fun holiday.

Good thing our CHRISTMAS PRESENT was already wrapped with curly CHRISTMAS RIBBON. I know because MOMMA TOLD ME SO.

SAN LUIS HALLOWEEN

The OCTOBER SUNSET looked like WITCHES SMOKE slowly drifting over a GOBLIN MOON. HALLOWEEN IS TODAY! Think these HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS mean we’ll have some EXTREME FUN when ROCKY HORROR shows up with his SLEDGE HAMMER—the WITCH’S STICK will be no match for it. After all this STURM UND DRANG, we’re ready for a WITCH’S LAUGH, some GOBLIN MUSIC, and a little HALLOWEEN HOCUS POCUS. The WITCH DOCTOR is on call in case GREEN EYED MONSTER meets up with LOW RED MONSTER and CREEK MONSTER. What a HOBGOBLIN! Just WAIT UNTIL DARK: we’ll QUOTE THE RAVEN from his GHOST OF SPOOKY HOLLOW poetry. Betcha we can scare GREEN GOBLIN and WATER GOBLIN clear out to OCTOBER COUNTRY (so thinks this WITCH WITH ATTITUDE). Need a DARKER SHADE of OCTOBER GOLD to LOOK SEE where the CANDLE IN THE WIND is glowing on DRACULA’S MISTRESS and the VOODOO DANCER. Uh-oh, BELA LUGOSI is showing off his DRACULA’S SMILE to NOSFERATU. That VAMPIRE LIPSTICK makes him look like he’s ready to take a MIDNIGHT TANGO across BLACK BRIAR BAY. “Hey, DRACULA! JAMAICAN ME CRAZY with all this MONSTER MAGIC!” said the GLOW MONSTER. “Enough with the HALLOWEEN FACE PAINT! And, no, you can’t take a CAT NAP, you wanna-be VAMPIRE BAT. Yuri’s GHOSTS AND GOBLINS are using a WITCHES SPELL to get here fast with their HALLOWEEN HARVEST for this OKTOBERFEST. The GREY WITCH, BROWN WITCH, and THIRD WITCH are bringing CARVED PUMPKIN PIE and FLAMING PUMPKINS and their WITCHES BREW of OCTOBER ALE. CAT WOMAN made her HALLOWEEN TAFFY. There’s no time to even play FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER!” “BRACE YOURSELF,” said COOKIE MONSTER, “there’s a KILLER of a HALLOWEEN COSTUME duo walking toward you—it’s the GOLDEN CHILD and the HANDSOME DEVIL.” Hey guys, get this—the WITCH WRAITH just told me no HALLOWEEN VOLCANO tonight! MADAME PELE is at WITCHDUCK POND with SNAKE IN THE GRASS BOO, GHOST FINGERS, and the MISSOURI MONSTER. Don’t have to worry about any EXPLODED PUMPKIN at this party! Send a WITCH CHANT over to the WITCHES COVEN at SANFORD WINERY and invite them, too. They can shake their WITCHES DANCE to RED OCTOBER‘s SOLAR MUSIC. That should get us some HALLOWEEN HIGH JINX a-rockin’, doncha think? (WITCHES WINK) Not sure if it’s going to be HALLOWEEN TREAT or HALLOWEEN TRICK, but come on down. That OCTOBER MOON over SUNSET BAY is pure WITCHCRAFT. We’ll hand ya a WITCHES CUP filled with OCTOBER SNOW to getcha started on the HALLOWEEN FUN. HAPPY HALLOWEEN from our HALLOWEEN PARTY, all you FLAMING PUMPKINS. Big HALLOWEEN KISSES from me, the HALLOWEEN WARLOCK, and our GOBLINS CHILD

A THANKSGIVING TO REMEMBER

ALVIN and his CHIPMUNK buddies decided that they wanted to go to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. It would be the best ADVENTURE TIME ever. MARCHING ON, with a PROMISE TO BEHAVE, they arrived at the parade. Their goal was to have a super time and a fantastic HOLIDAY. AFTER ALL, soon it would be BACK TO SCHOOL again.

The parade was a blast. Every MARCHING BAND played the most enjoyable holiday music. Everyone was so excited that they threw a WHOLEBUNCHALOTTA confetti. The floats were awesome. There was ALLADIN’S CASTLE and in the castle was the most beautiful PRINCESS, with her PRINCE CHARMING. Her dress looked like a PROM GOWN, ADORNED WITH JEWELS. This gorgeous gown was a PROSPECTOR’S DELIGHT. There was also a TOY CASTLE, filled with ELVES. TINKERBELL and PINOCCHIO were there as well. Then CINDERELLA’S COACH showed up and CINDERELLA was adorned in an ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS gown. THE BAND PLAYED ON as the parade continued. Finally, the parade was near the end and Santa showed up. SANTA’S BEARD glistened in the SUNSHINE. SANTA’S SUIT and SANTA’S PANTS were the most brilliant of reds. The HOLIDAY MOOD was evident as SANTA’S KEY was handed to the town mayor. What a JOYFUL OCCASION and a TIME WELL SPENT. Tired, it was TIME TO GO and join the FESTIVE time at home and eat the well prepared meal.

FEAST YOUR EYES on all that food they shouted. Not only was there turkey and dressing but the desserts were OUT OF THIS WORLD. What to decide on eating was a chore. The traditional PUMPKIN PIE was there of course but there was also TIRAMISU, PUMPKIN BERRY TRUFFLE, FESTIVE GINGERBREADS, CINNAMON CHERRIES, and also MAMMA’S CHERRY PIE. Alvin decided on PRUNE DANISH. The ABUNDANT BLESSINGS along with the HOLDAY SONG, ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS, was an end to a perfect day.

If they could stay awake, it was time to watch football. Putting on their GAME FACE, with PUPPY DOG EYES, the game began at SUNSET. It was now TRAIL’S END to a fabulous day. THANK YOU was uttered AGAIN AND AGAIN and A MOMENT IN TIME came to an end of a Thanksgiving to Remember.

DOWN HOME for THANKSGIVING

We gather in Aunt MILLIE’S KITCHEN as we arrive. Various members of the MILLER FAMILY and the WESTBOURNE KIRBY FAMILY CIRCLE join the annual THANKSGIVING day CELEBRATION bringing food and SMILES with them. GRANDMOTHER puts on her GRANDMA’S APRON and supervises both the cooking and the trips DOWN MEMORY LANE, flashing her GRANDMA’S SMILE and sharing her GRANDMA’S PUMPKIN PIE .

Before long, the CRANBERRY SAUCE , the WESTBOURNE SWEET POTATO PIE, mashed potatoes, RED EYE GRAVY and the BUTTERBALL turkey with all the FANCY FIXIN’S are brought to the table for the BIG FEAST and we all gather to enjoy the BOUNTY of the FALL HARVEST. ONE AFTER ANOTHER we GIVE THANKS and express our GRATITUDE for a BOUNTIFUL HARVEST and for the ENDURING FRIENDSHIP of FAITHFUL FRIENDS and family. MANY THANKS are said around the table, with SPECIAL THANKS given for those who were CALLED TO SERVE with our troops in FAR AWAY PLACES.

After dinner, kids are shooed outside while the DESSERT is readied. Before long, we can hear the WESTBOURNE KIRBY KIDS FLYING KITES shouting “APPLE PEACHES PUMPKIN PIE!” and they all come running to see what’s available. As the little ANGELS GATHER AROUND, the OOHS, AHS, AND WOWS are heard LOUD AND CLEAR as they express their APPRECIATION and ANTICIPATION for the grand assortment of DESSERT ON DISPLAY.

PUMPKIN PIE, APPLE CRISP, CARVED PUMPKIN PIE tarts, and an overflowing COOKIE JAR are all available alongside SCRUMPTIOUS CARROT CAKE, two versions of ANGEL CAKE,(one with FROSTING ON THE CAKE),Aunt HELEN’S BLACKBERRY COBBLER, GEORGIA PEACH COBBLER and the ever popular CHOCOLATE FUDGE that UNCLE DON says is FOR CHOCOLATE LOVERS ONLY! HEY LOOKIE – There is a TODDLER holding GRAPES GALORE in one hand and a FROSTED PINK GINGER COOKIE in the other with his BIG SISTER right behind him cradling a SUGAR COOKIE in the shape of TURKEY LURKEY. They both look PLEASED AS PUNCH and their HAPPY LAUGHTER ECHOES down the hall.

On Uncle ELIJAH’S MANTLE above the FIREPLACE are GRANDMA’s PRECIOUS CANDY jars and ANTIQUE SILVER tins which hold a WONDERFUL SELECTION of AWESOME CANDY. Tins of homemade STRAWBERRY CANDY sit beside jars of ELDERBERRY CANDY made fresh with GRANDPA’S CHOICE HANDCRAFTED elderberry TABLE WINE, striped RIBBON CANDY and even CANDY CORN in honor of the FALL HARVEST season. Everyone feels like a KID IN THE CANDY STORE looking at the DAZZLING DISPLAY.

Once our SWEET TOOTH is happy, COUSIN CHARLES calls out “LET THE GAMES BEGIN” and kids scramble OUT OF HERE to be FIRST IN LINE to play HIDE AND SEEK, BASEBALL, LEAP FROG and HOP SCOTCH. The kids always have MORE FUN than a BARREL OF MONKEYS at these FAMILY AFFAIRs and the CHILDREN’S LAUGHTER ECHOES through the FARMSTEAD.

All too soon it is TIME TO GO. We pause long enough for HUGS; GRANDPA HUGS, BIG HONKING BEAR HUGS and whole group hugs we call OCTOPUS HUGS. With calls of “THANKS A BUNCH”, and “SAME TIME NEXT YEAR” we start our JOURNEY HOME. What A PEACHY DAY!

HALLOWEEN FUN
FABULOUS FRIEDA, SASSY SUSAN, and WICKED WANDA asked MAMMA CALLIE if they could go for a MIDNIGHT SAIL on BLUE LAKE with their cousin, CHICAGO ROSIE, visiting after the CHICAGO FIRE. MAMMA CALLIE said no, and the girls asked why. BECAUSE I SAID SO, answered Mamma. “Oh, please,” pleaded the girls. “If you are out that late neighbors such as JEALOUS JAKE might start MALICIOUS RUMORS.” LITTLE AUDREY begged to go trick or treating with her sisters but MAMMA CALLIE said, “READ MY LIPS, no.”

As the AWAITED HOUR approached the girls watched the SUNSET OVER TWO RIVERS and heard the mournful whistle of the train headed for the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. Finally they were on their way with this warning, “You girls stay on ADAMS STREET and keep away from SMOOCH HOLLOW. If you see the BLACK EYED GYPSY, stay away from her, too. And don’t let me hear about you hitchin’ a ride in DOUG’S RED MERCEDES!”

They stopped at the first house, where the CRABBY OLD MAN lived, related to BONIBRAE WITCHES AND WARLOCKS, who grudgingly gave them some STRAWBERRY CANDY.

AUNT PITTY PAT was next, an ATLANTA SOUTHERN BEAUTY in her day, but was MARRIED TO MR. GRINCH, a VAMPIRE. It was a BLESSING that the ATLANTA DRESDEN DOLL herself answered the door with a “Happy Halloween y’all,” and a handful of HALLOWEEN TAFFY for each.

IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT, they walked on, joined by DELIGHTFUL DAVID, (BELLA LUGOSI), CHARMING CHARLIE, (RODEO CLOWN), and AWESOME DAN looking AWFULLY FLASHY in ELVIS’S CAPE, protecting them from GHOSTS AND GOBLINS. or if THERE BE DRAGONS lurking in the DARK PASSAGE between homes.

THE MILKMAN’S BROTHER met them carrying THE MILKMAN’S BABY, a little girl with ADORABLE CURLS wearing a PINK TUTU. He had a TWINKLE IN THE EYE as he handed the group HALLOWEEN CANDY.

DIZZY MISS LIZZY who was always IN A TIZZY opened the door with a lamp BURNING SO BRIGHTLY that it was hard to see her RAPID EYE MOVEMENT, counting out LEMON LIP SMACKERS.

When a headless horseman approached, all of them decided to HUNKER DOWN, but now there was a COOL MOON RISING and they realized that the headless horseman was none other than LITTLE RICKY, one of their classmates with whom they had promised to be FRIENDS FOR LIFE.

The door at the next house opened and there stood a RED EYED SHOCKER, whose eyes glowed like DARK RED EMBERS. Shrieking in terror, all of the kids clutched their GOODIE bags tightly, each carrying an OVERSIZED LOAD of candy and fled back to their homes trembling all the way. MAMMA CALLIE carefully checked the candy and secretly stashed the SHERRY CANDY for herself but left the remainder for the girls. Soon all were asleep, their heads tucked safely under the covers, dreaming of their ONCE IN A LIFETIME Halloween adventure and looking forward to FUN IN THE SUNSHINE tomorrow

FREE BIRD

Ever since she could REMEMBER, little BECKY LYNN the EAGLE was told she was born on a very SPECIAL DAY. But she didn’t really understand what was so MARVELOUS about the FOURTH OF JULY.

Her UNCLE BRYAN told her a FANCY TALE about FIREWORKS and the big CELEBRATION held every year on the FOURTH OF JULY. But he knew that PAUL the BLUEBIRD would know SOMETHING more about it. So she took FLIGHT to have a little BIRD TALK with PAUL.

PAUL the BLUEBIRD was SO PRETTY and BRIGHT, he was EASY AS PIE to TRACK DOWN. She asked, “Can you tell me why we CELEBRATE the FOURTH OF JULY?” He said “WITH PLEASURE! And I KNOW my ancestors were there to help out!”

“Now here’s the INSIDE STORY”, he said. “Back in the 1700’s there were some people that decided to create their own government here in AMERICA. They were very tired of taxation without representation from the BRITISH EMPIRE, so THIRTEEN COLONIES united together to claim their INDEPENDENCE.

There was a man named Patrick Henry who gave a speech during this time. My GRANDMOTHER (with many ‘greats’) was perched upon the windowsill while MISTER Henry was talking. Oh, he was RAMBLING ON about what all they needed to do to become FREE AT LAST from the British. As CAPTIVATING as his speech was, my GRANDMOTHER just knew he had to have a FANTASTIC ending to get the men to TAKE CHARGE of the situation. So she flew into the room and created a GENTLE BREEZE to get MISTER Henry’s ATTENTION. With the tips of her WINGS she fluttered SIGN LANGUAGE to SIGNAL a few choice words. After she had signed “GIVE ME LIBERTY”, MISTER Henry knew what to say to wrap up his speech. He PUFFED UP his chest, and looking at each AMERICAN PATRIOT in the room, he said “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, GIVE ME LIBERTY or give me death!” Now the men were ALL FIRED UP and ready to start a REVOLUTION. And my GRANDMOTHER was ECSTATIC that she had helped with MISTER Henry’s speech.

Now even though the declaration of INDEPENDENCE was signed on the FOURTH OF JULY 1776, it was a long, hard fight. The war became known as the AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and it wasn’t until 1783 when the Treaty of PARIS was signed that INDEPENDENCE was finally won. Unfortunately, by the time it was over, BOTH SIDES NOW had lost many lives. But because of THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE of all those brave men and women, we CELEBRATE THE DAY known as INDEPENDENCE DAY.

BECKY LYNN was BEGINNING to understand how important the FOURTH OF JULY was. She felt BETTER THAN ever about her birthday. “THANK YOU!”, she said. “You are a good STORY TELLER and if you know any more stories, I would love to hear them”. PAUL said, “ANYTIME, COME AGAIN sometime and I’ll tell you all about the BOSTON TEA PARTY”.

A Kentucky Easter Day

It was a KENTUCKY SUNRISE for ANGEL and RUSSELL. Being EASTER SUNDAY, Russell got Angel an EASTER CORSAGE.

They had their MORNING COFFEE with WESTBOURNE MOM’S CINNAMON ROLLS. They shared HUGS AND KISSES and said I LOVE YOU to each other.

Angel had her EASTER FINERY laid out and she DRESSED IN PINK, while Russell had his DRESS BLUES and GIFT TIE. Angel was GRANDMA'S GIRL, so she received the JEWELS OF ESTER.

They left their OLD KENTUCKY HOME and took the ROAD TO DIXIE in the direction of the EASTERN SKY to the church in their BLUE CHARGER and being that it was HORSE COUNTRY, they passed WHITE WASHED PICKET FENCES and KENTUCKY HILLS along the way and saw a BUNNY. They heard a CARDINAL and were SO EXCITED to see an EASTERN BLUEBIRD! They felt a BREEZE that was DELIGHTFUL through the opened windows.

Inside were BARBARA and TONY. LATE AGAIN was CATHERINE and ROBERT. EARLY ARRIVAL was KELLY AND KEN. It was WONDERFUL TO SEE BETTY AND BOB! IT'S A MIRACLE that JAUNTY JULIE and MATT showed up! BILL AND GAYLE were PRETTY LATE! Everyone said their EASTER GREETING to one another and smiled.

While the EASTER BELLS were ringing, FATHER KERRY started the Mass with an EASTER PRAYER and an EARLY MORNING BLESSING and then stated BLESSED ART THOU. We were all SINGING HIS PRAISES to GOD ALONE. We all felt GOD'S BLESSING. Father Kerry finished the Mass with the words of PEACE BE WITH YOU and GO IN PEACE.

During the SUNNY AFTERNOON, we all gathered in the MEETINGHOUSE. The FABULOUS FEAST was PRIME RIB, BIG HAM, CHICKEN AND WAFFLES, SHRIMP COCKTAIL, SWEET POTATOES, SCRAMBLED EGGS AND BACON, BLACK EYED PEAS, RED BEANS AND RICE, CELERY PLATE, FANCY GREEN beans, FRUIT BOWL, BUTTERED BISCUITS, DINNER ROLLS, COFFEE AND CREAM, PARTY PUNCH, LEMON ICE TEA, LEMONADE, COCONUT CREAM pie, ANGEL CAKE, STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM. Since Barbara and Tony were CELEBRATING 50 YEARS together, there was CAKE AND CHAMPAGNE. Everyone raised their glass for a CHAMPAGNE TOAST! Tony had given a card to Barbara that read DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE and his GIFT OF LOVE to her was GOLD AND RUBY earrings and necklace which she wore TODAY. It was the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE!

Afterward, we hugged each other and said HEARTFELT goodbyes after the JOYOUS BLESSED DAY!

A Family Thanksgiving Party

HAPPY HAPPY, THANKSGIVING, DARLA ANITA! Come on in and have some WESTBOURNE CHRISTMAS PUNCH. It's much to delicious to have only at Christmas! It's such A FOGGY DAY it's ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC that you could make it to our FAMILY PARTY. We'll try to make sure you make it HOME BEFORE DARK so you don't catch A WINTER CHILL, and I promise we'll have more to eat then CHEDDAR CHEESE and LOAVES AND FISHES!

AARON AND LISA are already here, have you heard that she's A LITTLE PREGNANT? The way they're acting, I think they've found the SECRET OF CONTENTMENT. Aaron found A GOOD WOMAN when he found Lisa.

COME ON OVER to the dining room and visit while I put on AARON'S DINNER PLATE. When was it you were leaving on your VACATION CRUISE? Does LINDA BECK still plan to go with you? It would be BEAUTIFUL to see a MEXICAN SUNRISE but WILD HORSES couldn't get me on that BOAT RIDE!

Yes DARLA ANITA, UNCLE BRYAN is in by the FAMILY HEARTH. He's telling stories about the EARLY DAYS when he was part of the CANADIAN BORDER PATROL. Something about A MOOSE FIISHING ON A POND ON MONDAY. and another about A TICK KISSING A MOOSE ON A WEDNESDAY. What an ABSOLUTE RIPPER!

Well let's have A TOUCH OF SHERRY and toast to UNCLE BRYAN. Then we'll join the rest of the family. We'll remind them what this HOLIDAY is all about and remember to count our BLESSINGS EACH DAY.

GHOULISH GREETINGS ( Halloween)

I've been having the most horrible NIGHT DREAMS lately, and am totally CLUELESS. Several nights ago, I dreamed I was sitting in the audience at the ROCKY HORROR show. As I looked around, sitting on one side of me was a BROWN WITCH wearing a COBURG FRIGHT WIG and on the other side sat a GREEN TARANTULA, a RUBY SPIDER,a BROWN RECLUSE, and a PURPLE TARANTUALA. (bad scenario for those with ARACHNEPHOBIA)

I tried to escape before being BITTEN,but IGOR was sitting right behind me, giving me OCTOPUS HUGS and a BIG KISS ! Escaping Igor's STICKY FINGERS, I ran down the aisle screaming, only to find the exit blocked by a BUBBLING ODDITY, a LAUGHING GIRAFFE, and an ELECTRIC LADY who was MOVING ALL OVER.

The horrible NIGHT VISION recurred last night and I was back at the ROCKY HORROR show. DARK AVENGERs were all singing a SONG WITHOUT WORDS, accompanied by WING BEATS. It sounded like something straight from OCTOBER THE THIRTY FIRST.

BROWN WITCH was there with her trio of sisters, GREY WITCH, MERRY WITCH, and THIRD WITCH. BROWN WITCH must have had a real PASSION FOR RED,as she was attired in a RUFFLED PINAFORE with RED SUSPENDERS. SILK STOCKINGS with BROADWAY RUBY SLIPPERS completed the ensemble. Although she was close enough for me to see her METALLIC BLUE EYES and the LITTLE WART on her nose, alas, she was no VISION OF BEAUTY. She carried a MAGIC AMETHYST and something resembling the SCAPES FROM HELL.

There seemed no escape from these CREATUREs OF THE NIGHT, since this time they had brought their friends. There was a variety of CREEPY CRAWLERs: LEAPING LIZARDS, TIGEREYE SPIDER, CORAL SPIDER, PINK SUPER SPIDER, SWIRLING SPIDER, and something strange resembling an ITSY BITSY SPIDER with CHESAPEAKE CRAB LEGS. Even WOLVERINE, OLD TERMITE and MISSY PIGGY were there! How I wished for an ARACHNIDAN TRAP, but SPIDER LADY and SPIDER MAN were guarding their pets, and they looked like DOUBLE TROUBLE.
PURPLE PEOPLE EATER was trying get MORTICIA's attention by smiling with his awful DRAGON MOUTH.I suppose you could say he had a real EYE FOR BEAUTY.

QUASIMODO was there, too with those SPOOKY FINGERS. I managed to evade his OCTOPUS HUGS, but he did give me a BIG SQUEEZE and offered me a
TRANSYLVANIAN COCKTAIL. All I could think of was escaping this horrible NIGHT DREAM, however.

To make matters worse, other terrifying creatures began moving down the aisle towards me. BUDDING ODDITY not only had BUNNY
EYES, but RABBIT EARS and CROCODILE JAWS.ELECTRIC LADY was still MOVING ALL OVER. SHIMMERING ELEGANCE she was not, riding atop
LAUGHING GIRAFFE. Just as I though all hope of escape was gone,a TREMOR shook the room, followed by a SONIC BOOM and a LIGHTNING STRIKE. As a SHOCKWAVE ran through the audience, I managed to slip past the spiders and and sneak through the side exit. That was one of the WILDEST DREAMS ever - I must stop sipping the CHARDONNAY and eating MILK CHOCOLATE so late at night!
